Looks like you & me froggie, nobody else seems interested.

I started my professional career at the age of 7 and eventually became the highest paid singer/comedienne/actress in Britain.
Although I was still recovering from cancer surgery, I continued to work entertaining the troops and raising money right through the war.
When I married an Italian movie director living in the US, the British govt treated me as an enemy alien and my popularity suffered.

Gracie Fields, though I can find no reference to "the British govt treated me as an enemy alien..."

Seeing as you both seem to need something to do: What name do a Macedonian poet, a game character and my grandson share?

Edit: There's heaps of game characters... The game character is a female Nintendo game character that may wear a power suit.

Samus, or Samius, son of Chrysogonus, late 3rd century BC.
Samus Aran is the protagonist of Nintendo's Metroid video game series.

And I'm guessing that your grandson's name is.....Sam!!

Or Samuel, or even Samus........

Here's a party game where you get to keep your clothes on.

Just see if you can discover who this person is. Either her stage name or her real name will do.

I was a popular radio comedienne from the early 1930s to the early 1950s in the US, although I was not as famous as my husband. Before getting into show business, I worked in a department store and occasionally when I fluffed my lines, my husband would joke that there was still a job going at "May's".
I had to give up show business after all that time because - and this is true - I developed acute stage fright.

froggie, spot on with Gracie Fields. Yep, first they wouldn't renew her passport when she went to Capri to recuperate, then when she married Monty Bank the establishment types in Whitehall heaped all kinds of rubbish on her. There's a beautiful little movie called "Gracie" starring Jane Horrocks, best known as the clownish secretary in Absolutely Fabulous.

Herbert, already established as Mary Livingstone, the wife of Jack Benny. I don't know if any of the others you mentioned meet the same clues.

I was born in July, 1850.
I enlisted in the army in Dec, 1861. I kid you not.
My baptism of fire was in April, 1862.
My second foray, at the front, was not one of our finer moments.
Many of our men threw away their kit, including weapons.
At a Unit Muster, it was noted that I was the only soldier able to fully perform his duties as I had retained my equipment.
This was seen by those higher up as a sign of bravery, and shortly after I was  awarded the Medal of Honour.

No....
Mainly for the reason that he lost his "awards" due to aforementioned crackers.

Beauty...
And I left out half the details because I thought they would make it too easy.

Guess it's your go, OB...

Being one of the reasons for leaving out the fact that, at 13 years of age, Willie Johnson was the youngest MoH winner ever.

I was born in 1952 and played 37 games for Hereford United, a lowly team in which I somehow managed to then build a successful career in sports journalism. I joined the Green Party in 1988. I am the son of God and see lizards everywhere.
