That roman bloke who stuck his hand in the fire until it burned off, to show Romans were tough, and therefore a waste of time torturing them.
Somebody the left handed, he was called, or by his mates, stumpy.

Close enough....

Gaius Mucius Scaevola.

During the siege, a young Roman of noble birth, Gaius Mucius, enters the enemy camp and tries to assassinate king Porsenna. However, instead of killing him, he kills one of his scribes. When he is brought before Porsenna, the man shows his contempt for torture and pain by voluntarily placing his right hand in a fire. Impressed by this steadfastness, Porsenna releases him, and Mucius answers to this gentle act by informing the king that there are no less than 300 men in Rome who have sworn to kill Porsenna. After his return to the city, Mucius is surnamed Scaevola ("left hand") and the Senate rewards him with a grant of land west of the river, the Mucia Prata, "Mucian Meadows".

Your turn, Moz....

In the light of mozzaok's absence, without leave it should be noted, I will undertake to refresh the quiz.

My descendants over many generations are numbered among many of the noble & royal families of England.
Although a commoner myself, I later became married to perhaps the most powerful man of his time.
Shakespeare put one of his most famous speeches into my second husband's voice.

John of Gaunt: Second Husband.

Speech:
This royal throne of kings, this scepter'd isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall,
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

I am a man or wealth and taste.

I gained my fame by putting down a slave uprising.

Caesar and all the Equestrians owed me money.

I was Consul of Rome.

Right on froggie. I thought the clues were sufficiently obscure to make it difficult. Damn Google!

Damn Google!....Indeed!!
But I find having to choose just what keywords to punch in helps keep the old mind ticking over.

BTW....
The Shakespeare 'speech' was the trigger.
Just worked backwards from there.

That, and some dim, distantly remembered Eng. Lit. lesson.

Looks like you & me froggie, nobody else seems interested.

I started my professional career at the age of 7 and eventually became the highest paid singer/comedienne/actress in Britain.
Although I was still recovering from cancer surgery, I continued to work entertaining the troops and raising money right through the war.
When I married an Italian movie director living in the US, the British govt treated me as an enemy alien and my popularity suffered.

Seeing as you both seem to need something to do: What name do a Macedonian poet, a game character and my grandson share?

Edit: There's heaps of game characters... The game character is a female Nintendo game character that may wear a power suit.
