Can you get Potato Cod in northern NSW? Are there any species that look similar?

With chips maybe. Potato Cod come from tropical waters. It is the same for all marine Cod species.

I called NSW fisheries today. Apparently you can get them in NSW, even though it is not considered part of their range. They can be confused with Malabar cod apparently.

They are protected in QLD and WA, so it is unlikely you will be able to get them in the shops. NSW fisheries aren't exactly happy about people taking them either.
