The replacement engine, as referred to above.

I always thought Ryobis were made in Asia, but no.

It's made in the USA.

how old is that engine?

Ryobi's probably are made in China ... now

Mid to late 2000s, at a rough guess.

I've a spare incomplete engine with the same USA tag on it.

It's possible that they can be dated from the numbers, but I'll have to do a bit of Googling.

And the bad: The flywheel of the project 2-stroke has defied all methods of removal
short of actual destruction. And it has to come off to service the magneto.

So, due to time constraints, I'll grab a wiper-snipper from the Men's Shed tomorrow
and use that as my project instead. Puts me a lesson behind, but meh! I can make
up the time easily enough.

When the going gets tough, oh poo that's tough give up.

Lucky it wasn't a customer wanting his engine fixed.

Did you see the part about time constraints?

Don't want to be frigging about holding the rest of the class up.

The instructor agreed with my decision and my reasons.

I'll meet you there.
After all my research, I have boringly come to a 100 series landcruiser. 4.2 L turbo diesel. 5 speed auto would be nice, 4 speed auto would do quite as well in reality.

A bit of a mixed bag this week - some good news, and some bad.

First, the good: Another theory exam under the belt, with a result of 97%, and
apparently I've passed all the prac assessments so far.

And the bad: The flywheel of the project 2-stroke has defied all methods of removal
short of actual destruction. And it has to come off to service the magneto.

V6 Petrol indeed..  Roll Eyes

you need to be slapped on the willy with a wet bus ticket..

Well, the 2-stroke project engine has been stripped, checked and re-assembled, and
is now ready to go. Ran out of workshop-time tonight, so haven't started it yet, but it
is ready to go first thing next lesson.

The only repair needed was replacement of all the fuel lines and primer pump, which
were perished beyond use.

Instructor is very pleased with my progress so far...  Huh

More prac. assessment results and another end-of-module theory exam tonight.

'Only' got 85% in the theory exam, but I can live with it as my aggregate is still above 95%.

And I've been assessed as competent in all the prac. assessments so far.

As we move to chain-saws, I was at a loose end as to a project saw, as mine is incomplete
at present, with a missing starter and muffler (lost in a house-move), and a broken trigger
mechanism.

But I snagged an old McCulloch Power-Mac 320 for zero dollars (see pic), it only lacks an air-
cleaner and cover, which won't be too hard to source, and it will run without it if not.

We have to demonstrate that we can sharpen and adjust a chain, set the depth-gauges, and
true/dress the bar, so I may as well do my own as do a TAFE 'demo' chain and bar.

Only about six weeks to go now until 'graduation'. While I may not top the class, I certainly
won't be far off it, going on the results so far.

Well done.

My husband and I are going to restore (?) a chainsaw engine. He bought me a tiny little model airplane engine too so that I could learn the parts but I think it's too small.

He also got a little tiny light bulb and a switch with other stuff to teach me about electricity because I'm scared to use the multimeter. I will take pics when we start the chainsaw (we don't even have one yet) and we can compare projects.

Chainsaws and line-trimmers are good to learn with because there isn't a lot to them (not complicated). A little
diesel or glow-plug model aero engine is essentially the same, but MUCH smaller, as you say.

That's a good way to learn about electricity without running the risk of zapping yourself (well, you might, but it
won't be dangerous if not on mains power - use batteries).

Look forward to seeing the results of your project...  Smiley
