Sharks and Whales
Apr 16th, 2014 at 5:05pm

A 5 metre shark http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-australia/whale-carcass-lures-5m-great-w... is of course a scary thought.

Is it true, or are there at least competing theories, to the idea that the recovery of whale numbers has led to the shark attack increases in W.A.?

I think it is more down to the ban on catching certain species of shark - in particular great whites.

The extra whales obviously help. It is my understanding that great whites eat baby whales, but I'm not sure. It always makes me nervous when I'm spearing with the humpbacks around. It would take a big shark to take one on.

I am wondering why some idiot removes whale carcasses from the water when they wash up on our coast.
They say it attracts sharks, well thats ok they are better off eating dead whale than live human.

I had a mother and calf humpback swim up from below me once, down off Newcastle. It freaked me out. At first I thought it was the bottom rushing up towards me and I was about to get rolled by a monster wave. It wasn't till I made out the outline of the white bits on the edge of the pic fin that I realised what it was. The water was clear, but not clear enough to see the whole whale at once.

World Record Catch: Fisherman Snares 800lb Shark
2 days 16 hours ago, Barcroft TV
A LAND fisherman caught a record-breaking 805lb mako shark - and then barbecued and ate it with his friends. Joey Polk, 29, and his two cousins Earnie Polk, 43, and Kenny Peterson, 21, battled the 11ft predator for more than an hour before finally hauling it onto the shore at a secret location on the Florida Panhandle. The Polk family normally release their catches and have helped local groups tag hundreds for conservation.

God dammmmmn dass a big fish!!!'

Looks a bit like a great white. I need to work on my shark ID. I saw 2 nasty looking ones yesterday but couldn't tell what they were.

It's incredible to think that a man could drag something like that onto the beach. I wonder if they used any anchors, winches etc? With most fishing rigs that thing would spool all your line in about ten seconds.

I saw a big spanish mackerel on the cleaning table yesterday. Must have been about 40kg.

And I'll bet he caught it on a 20lb breaking strain.  Wink It could be a Noah but a large Mako, mmm not sure they usually look way more compact than that and dorsal fins not so large.
I can't post a picture yet,but it's not a Mako. The small fins at the tail are absent.

Some legs being pulled here .I think its a Great White

Definitely a Mako. I've seen one of these guys, about 3.5m long launch themselves out of the water at the back of a fishing boat and do a barrel roll near touching distance. You hear about them jumping into boats and thrashing about - after that day, I could believe it.
