The fellow on the Channel 9 news was telling us that the plane 'strayed' off course.

Note to Ch9 News Desk: When a plane makes a sharp left turn it's not 'straying' anywhere ~ it's making a radical detour towards an entirely different direction.

Radar doesn't 'rely' on a transponder - the transponder merely responds to a signal asking that it ID itself by a pre-selected code, which MAY show on radar of the right kind.

I recall - on the issue of missing jets - that near the end of WW II - the USS Indianoplis was sunk after transporting a nuclear bomb to Tinian and was missing for days without anyone noticing.

This lead to a system of mandatory 'call-in' at specified times.

You should read the story of the Indanopolis sinking - 'The Mission Of The Shark' - many of the crew were eaten by sharks while they waited for rescue.

Mandatory call-ins on the hour... sounds like a good idea for airliners...

For a while now. Without the transponder the radar cant work out what the plane is, its just a blip. The transponder then gives info about the plane.

Missing Malaysia Plane: 20 All-Electric Car-Linked Passengers On Board, Names Released
Saturday, March 8, 2014 18:04

...

Update: March 9, 6:00 P.M. ET

Late Sunday, the continued lack of answers — or even many clues — to the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 Boeing 777-200 aircraft’s disappearance added to misery of family members left behind.

“With Malaysian officials refusing to release many details of their investigation and sometimes presenting conflicting information, the families and friends of victims became increasingly frustrated, the New York Times reported late Sunday. (Emphasis added)

It is conceivable that the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 plane is “cloaked,” hiding with high-tech electronic warfare weaponry that exists and is used. In fact, this type of technology is precisely the expertise of Freescale, that has 20 employees on board the missing flight

Update: Malaysian papers report Malaysian Flight MH370 crashed
The airline said in a statement early Saturday they are attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. There was no distress signal before the plane, with 239 passengers, went down. One report said seven people on board had stolen passports, while it is confirmed that two people had stolen passports.

Vietnamese Navy confirmed that Malaysia Flight MH370, from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing, crashed into the sea off Tho Chu island.

Tuoi Tre quoted Navy Admiral Ngo Van Phat, Commander of Region 5, as saying that military radar reported that the plane crashed into the sea at a location 246km south of Phu Quoc island.

“The plane lost contact in Ca Mau province airspace before it had entered contact with Ho Chi Minh City air traffic control,” a statement posted on the official Vietnamese government website said.

The plane was meant to transfer to Ho Chi Minh City air traffic control at 1.22am Malaysian time but never appeared, the statement reported by AFP said, citing a senior Ministry of Defence official.

The Ministry of Defence launched rescue efforts to find the plane, coordinating work with Malaysian and Chinese officials.

The missing Malaysian Airlines flight was carrying 152 Chinese, 38 Malaysians, 12 Indonesians, and three American among other nationalities, seven with stolen passports, according to latest reports.

The aircraft had left Kuala Lumpur at 12.41am and was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6.30am.

My best guess, some one phucked up and did not fuel it up or something else equally as stupid.
Then they tried to land on the quiet some where.

I know nothing about the air regulations, but I do know human stupidity.

Without a transponder, you can't identify it. There are many light aircraft that don't have transponders. Without specifically watching for it, it could easily be missed.

A transponder 'squawks' a pre-set number and thus enables air traffic controllers to ID which flight is which and (hopefully) know at what height it is flying (these are pre-set also for East-West/ North-South etc) and what type of aircraft the machine is.  It can also ID the category of aircraft - military, civilian etc.

This is only available on the proper radar system, and not all systems have the ability to show transponder number.

As you say - light aircraft are not required to have a transponder and are governed by different flight rules, with which they must comply at all times so as to avoid conflict with airliner and military air traffic.  This includes abiding by 'no-fly zones' and other restrictions.

A transponder in every light aircraft would cloud the screen for operators, so light aircraft MUST be under control of an ATC inside specified zones, and must obey instructions without deviation.

This question has no bearing here - the actions of the aircraft under consideration here seem odd to say the least.

IF it was indeed orbiting along its route without any prior warning or instruction to do so - there was a problem that should have been passed on to ATC in some way.

As Miketrees said - human error is always present to some degree - including that if there were an emergency, the pilots should have declared so early.  Lack of communication with ATC has caused aircraft to crash for lack of fuel in the past, so similar things can take place - for example - damage to the aircraft which requires an emergency landing - such things MUST be relayed to ATC so that proper action can be taken and airways cleared, etc.

A Egypt air 777 had a nasty cockpit fire while on the ground  preparing for departure.

If a similar fire happened in the sky it could lead to disaster.

Is Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight at Utapao, Thailand?

[snip]

A very interesting reader email poses a theory which could explain conflicting reports about the Malaysia Flight 370′s disappearance, subsequent reappearance before it disappeared completely again. It could also explain why family members calling the cell phones of passengers and being rung through just to get a voicemail service, indicating the phones are still active and not destroyed. It could also explain why after the initial reports, information today comes out that the plane was spotted on radar in the opposite direction of where they were to emergency land before disappearing again.

Initially the reader quotes a China Times article: (Translated by Google)

"In addition, the U.S. Embassy said the 2:43 U.S. military bases stationed in Thailand U-Tapao SOS signal was listening to some of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 emergency call, said the aircraft cabin facing disintegration driver call, they want a forced landing. U.S. troops are currently stationed in Thailand, Malaysia has been providing this signal."

U-Tapao International Airport
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

U-Tapao-Pattaya International Airport, also spelled Utapao and U-Taphao, is a joint civil-military public airport serving Rayong and Pattaya, cities in Thailand. It is approximately 90 miles (140 km) southeast of Bangkok, near Sattahip on the Gulf of Siam.

Thanks for the reply thought you maybe interested. From what i understand early Saturday many online forums(pilots and local Thai expats) were abuzz with this news…since then nothing which is very strange. Especially considering the source.

Malaysia Plane Hidden With Electronic Weapon? 20 Hi-Tech EW Defense Passengers
Sunday, March 9, 2014 9:26

...

Update: March 11, 2014, 12:00 P.M.

Villagers near Marang, on Malaysia’s eastern coast, told police they heard a “loud and frightening noise” around 1.20am Saturday morning, according to Tom Phillips, a Telegraph correspondent in Kuala Lumpur.

Alias Salleh, a 36-year-old truck driver told Malaysia’s The Sun Daily, he and friends had run towards the source of the noise, “but did not see anything unusual.”

“The noise sounded like “the fan of a jet engine,” Mr Salleh added.

“My friends and I heard the ringing noise for about two minutes,” said Mohd Yusri Mohd Yusof, a 34-year-old villager.

Original story: Malaysia Plane Hidden With Electronic Weapon? 20 High-Tech EW Defense Passengers

Four people in particular who boarded the missing Malaysian plane are being investigated, two for stolen passports and two other passport-related suspects. Those four suspects plus twenty people on board involved in cutting edge electric technology. some used for defense purposes, raise a question with this reporter about electronic weaponry hiding the plane.

Added to the tragic mystery is why not one country checked databases for information about stolen passports used to board the Malaysia Airlines flight.

New electronic weapons allow jamming, blinding, deafening and more, so that a plane could possibly vanish from radar detection and security systems would not be activated. Basic radar Electronic Counter-Measure strategies used in electronic warfare (EW) are: 1) radar interference, 2) target modifications, and 3) changing electrical properties of air.

For example, a U.S. intelligence assessment described to The Daily Beast by current and former U.S. intelligence officials, concluded any Israeli attack on Iran would go far beyond fighter plane airstrikes and would likely deploy EW against Iran’s electric grid, Internet, cellphone network, and emergency frequencies for firemen and police officers.

“For example, Israel has developed a weapon capable of mimicking a maintenance cellphone signal that commands a cell network to “sleep,” effectively stopping transmissions, officials confirmed. The Israelis also have jammers capable of creating interference within Iran’s emergency frequencies for first responders.”

In a 2007, “the Syrian military got a taste of this warfare when Israeli planes ‘spoofed’ the country’s air-defense radars, at first making it appear that no jets were in the sky and then in an instant making the radar believe the sky was filled with hundreds of planes.”

Last year, it was announced that new stealth technology makes airplanes invisible not only to radar.....

BREAKING: Iran Accuses USA of Kidnapping Malaysia Plane 370
March 12 2014
Out of left field comes this insane accusation. Seriously, every nation is just asking for a fight with other nations, reminds me of snarling alley dogs, just waiting to tear each other up.
Iranian lawmaker Hossein Hosseini is blaming the United States of “hijacking” Malaysia airplane flight MH 370
On Tuesday, an influential Iranian lawmaker accused the United States of having “kidnapped” Flight 370, saying it was an attempt to “sabotage the relationship between Iran and China and South East Asia.”
The parliamentarian, Hossein Naghavi Hosseini, who is the spokesman for the foreign policy committee, responded to the news on Tuesday that two Iranian nationals had been traveling on the missing flight holding stolen passports. This accusation was a “plot,” Mr. Naghavi Hosseini said, according to the Tasnim news agency.
“Documents published by the Western media about two Iranians getting on the plane without passports is psychological warfare. Americans recruit some people for such kinds of operations so they can throw the blame on other countries, especially Muslim countries,” he said.

Iranian lawmaker blames U.S. for plane 'kidnapping'

...

Pouria Nour Mehrdad and Delavar Mohammadreza, the two Iranian men allegedly travelling using stolen passports on Flight 370
With the fate and location of the missing Malaysia Airlines jet still unexplained on Tuesday, the police were investigating the possibilities of hijacking, sabotage and possible psychological or personal problems among the crew and passengers, while other agencies in Malaysia continued to investigate noncriminal explanations, as Thomas Fuller, Jane Perlez and Alan Cowell reported.

On Tuesday, an influential Iranian lawmaker accused the United States of having "kidnapped" Flight 370, saying it was an attempt to "sabotage the relationship between Iran and China and South East Asia."

The parliamentarian, Hossein Naghavi Hosseini, who is the spokesman for the foreign policy committee, responded to the news on Tuesday that two Iranian nationals had been traveling on the missing flight holding stolen passports. This accusation was a "plot," Mr. Naghavi Hosseini said, according to the Tasnim news agency.

"Documents published by the Western media about two Iranians getting on the plane without passports is psychological warfare. Americans recruit some people for such kinds of operations so they can throw the blame on other countries, especially Muslim countries," he said.

Thousands of Iranians, if not more, wait in Asian countries with friendly visa rules to make journeys to the West and to Australia. Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia in particular are popular springboards for middle-class Iranians who enter on tourist visas and are then helped by local travel agents and human smugglers to travel to Western countries.

Interpol had confirmed on Sunday that two passports, an Austrian and an Italian, were recorded in its Stolen and Lost Travel Documents (S.L.T.D.) database and were used by passengers on board Flight 370.

...

On Tuesday, Ronald K. Noble, Interpol's secretary general, said the two men's identities were confirmed by Iranian authorities as Seyed Mohammed Reza Delavar, 29, and Pouria Nourmohammadi, 18.

He said the Iranian authorities had also determined that neither of the men had a criminal record and that both had left Iran legally.

The Malaysian police gave the Iranian teenager's full name as Pouria Nourmohammadi Mehrdad.

Khalid Abu Bakar, the inspector general of the Malaysian police, said he was using a passport that had been stolen from an Austrian man and was traveling to Germany, where he was to meet his mother.

On Tuesday Iran's foreign ministry said it was ready to cooperate in the investigations.

"We have received information on possible presence of two Iranians among the plane's crews. We are pursuing the issue," said Marzieh Afkham, the Iranian foreign ministry spokeswoman. "We have informed our embassy in Malaysia that we are ready to receive further information about the issue from Malaysian officials. We have announced that we were ready for cooperation."
