Two very interesting announcements from the world

Two very interesting announcements from the world of Defence.  Both have ramifications for their region.

The first, today. Saab Beats Boeing in Brazil’s $4.5 Billion Fighter Jet Deal.

The second, a few months ago.  Argentina Buying Spanish Mirage F.1s

Both will alter the present airpower balance in South America.

Not that long ago it looked like the French Rafael was the winner - with technology transfers and French investment and purchase of the underdevelopment of the Embraer Military Transport KC-390.  The SAAB JAS-39  Gripen NG is a pretty awesome aircraft. lessons learnt from Libyan Operations addressed some shortfalls. The recent introduction of a new engine, increased range and ASEA radar amongst others make it a formidable aircraft. Brazil is expected to acquire 36 which puts it ahead of pretty much any one in the region and a big leap from old F-5E/F tiger (continuously upgraded) and Mirage 2000s in its inventory. When fully operational and with all capabilities in place this would be the most capable aircraft in this region in the near future. It is unlikely that Argentina, Columbia, Mexico or Venezuela will be on par given their own internal challenges. Brazils recent oil and gas discoveries are providing avenues for this type of purchase
