Recently I was put onto Malwarebytes as a good free program to clean out my PC.

All good until it was fully loaded into my system.

Then, when it got to the removal bit, only offered to clean up about 10% free and I would have to pay for the rest.

The bitch part was that in the download it added what I would consider malware in itself.

Half a dozen desktop icons covering all sort of connections.
Another part, not referred to, highlighted key words/phrases in links I was viewing, eg. 'child care', and a pop-up would direct me to another link covering that subject.

Took me nearly an hour to find and uninstall everything that had been downloaded.

I'm still not sure that I have eliminated everything as a couple I found had no identification up front and I had to go through all files by date.

Just thought I'd put this here as, for someone who is a tech noof-noof, some 'free' downloads can be a bit scarey/confusing.

Odd!
I installed it recently, and none of this happened.
Where did you download it from?
I've noticed that some sites offering software want me to install their special downloader first -- thence flows much malware!

Probably from here...

So that tells me I still have some of it in a place I can't find.

You could try doing a 'System Restore' to a time before you installed M-Bytes.

Or you could run a registry cleaner like C-Cleaner to remove any traces of it.

You should then be able to reinstall a working copy.

I ran the trial version for some years, and depending where you get it from, it may contain malware and/or unwanted programs.

Check each screen carefully as you install, don't just click 'OK-OK-OK' without looking to see what you are okaying.

Not a link to programs, but to a couple of VERY good Windows help/support forums...

For Vista: http://www.vistax64.com/

For Windows 7: http://www.sevenforums.com/

For Windows 8 & 8.1: http://www.eightforums.com/

For Windows 9: http://www.nineforums.com/

These are very highly-regarded and extremely well-moderated boards, and there's always
someone (or many, many someones, SevenForums alone has nearly 300,000 members) to
help you solve just about any problem you can imagine.

And quite a lot that you couldn't possibly imagine.

It's also worth checking out their huge trove of tutorials as well.

      Excellent!
I c&p'd that to my programme files folder for future reference, thank you indeed! Wink

A lesson I learned the hard way, but now do read everything carefully before I hit that tab!

Thanx...

Will do a 'System Restore' I think.

There IS a possibility that I OKed everything, as I was put onto it as 'a good thing'....
Since manually wiping everything I could find for that date things appear to be alright, but will still go for the restore.

Next time use 'Revo Uninstaller' ~ it's free, and plucks out every tiny bit of the unwanted app from their hiding places.

What I'm looking for is a FREE system tray clock that chimes every half hour. I paid for 'Atomic Alarm Clock' only to discover it chimes only on the hour.

It's quite peculiar. I don't know how many times over the years I've looked something on Google and couldn't find it, and then asked the forum members about it ... and then immediately afterwards I find it by entering the correct search-question on Google.

I've done it again: link

Oops. No good. Not compatible with my Windows7 64-bit version.

Then found link ... but it's not compatible with Windows7

Did you try Compatibility Mode?

Some stuff that won't work or isn't compatible can be made to work this way.

Go to the offending program's icon, right-click on it, and from the menu select 'Troubleshoot compatibility'.

Windows will apply the settings it thinks are best, and will then ask you to test the program.

If it works, great. If not, you can try again with different settings.

If you've already tried this, please disregard.

A comment of mine from another thread, but which warrants re-posing here...

"As many of you know, I use and recommend MalwareBytes anti-malware software.

I've been running the paid version (ver 1.70.0.1100) and whenever a newer version
was released it would always ignore the fact that I was using the Pro version, and
upgrade itself as a trial version. This usually resulted in my having to un-install it then
re-install the older full version, or run with the updates turned off.

Well, last week it decided to upgrade itself to the latest version, but this time it kept
my licence active and did not install the trial but instead the full Pro version.

So, I now not only still have the full version, but the latest one. Except it's no longer
'Pro' but 'Premium'.

All good!   Smiley Smiley Smiley "

Also, for those used to the old, familiar MalwareBytes GUI, it's gone.

There's a whole new interface, which is easier to use, and just as functional as
the old one. See pic below.

Hope this is useful to others who may have earlier 'Pro' versions.

Regular readers will be aware that I have been using and recommending Easeus ToDo Backup for
taking system images (ghost images, for you Norton users) for quite some time.

I had been running version 5.8 Workstation, which is the full, paid version. But recently I had an
image fail to restore, and not only that, it killed my system altogether.

I managed to recover, eventually, and went looking to find the problem Which I did.

Seems that this version will not work with Windows 8.1 update 1, although it did with Windows
8.1. Upgrading to the latest version (version 6.5 Workstation or the equivalent free trial version)
fixed the issue, and it's now working just fine again.

Go here http://www.todo-backup.com/home/ for the latest versions.

Hope this helps anyone who's upgraded to 8.1 update 1 and had Easeus fail on them.
