Should Australia Buy These Fighter Jets?.

F35 fleet grounded by engine crack.     Sad

    AAP
    February 23, 2013

THE Pentagon says it has grounded its entire fleet of F-35 fighter jets after discovering a cracked engine blade.

The problem was discovered during what the Pentagon called a routine inspection at Edwards Air Force Base, California, of an Air Force version of the F-35. Other versions of the F-35 are flown by the Navy and the Marine Corps.

All versions were grounded on Friday.     Shocked

The F-35 is the Pentagon's most expensive weapons program at a total estimated cost of nearly $US400 billion ($A392.50 billion).

The suspension of flight operations will remain in effect until an investigation of the problem's root cause is determined.

The Pentagon said the engine in which the problem was discovered was being shipped to a Pratt & Whitney facility for more thorough evaluation.

The latest Russian planes can out-maneuver the Yanky planes but
they don't have such sophisticated weapons & systems.

So if we were to buy the russian crap we could put on much better air shows, instead of providing air superiority.

Yeah that's a brilliant plan. Australia will NEVER buy russian or chinese military equipment.

Nearly all latest technology military aircraft have these concurrency problems, this is not specific to F-35

The F111 was parked up in the nevada desert while GD sorted out the cracks in the Wing Carry Through Box & wings; turned out to be a pretty decent strike fighter.

Having said that, we should have gone through the proper procurement processes for the replacement fighter, instead of howard making the decision for the RAAF.

Why buy any planes?
They're just expensive toys that we cannot afford and that will never be used for the purpose they were built for.
Like 99% of our defence spending its a waste of taxpayers money.

For the number of people that Australia has.  The amount of money we spend on defense is ridiculous.     Sad

They are a deterrent capability. The fact we have them stops other countries from having designs on our territory. Your philosophy was the same as the 1930s British. Their failure to maintain a proper defence force is what emboldened Hitler and at best made the war longer or at worse, allowed it to happen.

Who are we trying to deter?
Europe has had thousands of years invading each other and the last country to invade Australia was the poms. Apart from that the yanks seems to be the only country hell bent on starting wars in our region every few decades.

Possibilities there, crook.

Re-jig the airframe, fuselage and wing configuration.
Retro-fit an updated electronic management and weapons system.
And perhaps boost the propulsion system.
I'm thinking somewhere in the range of jet propulsion for that last bit.

How say you??
