Let Slipper case run, say MPs
Jul 20th, 2012 at 2:27pm

Quote:
Senior Labor and coalition MPs say police and prosecutors should be left to pursue the case against Speaker Peter Slipper without speculation or interference.

The Australian Federal Police on Thursday night confirmed it had completed its inquiries into cab voucher use by Mr Slipper and was consulting prosecutors to determine if 'further action is required'.

It will be up to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions whether the matter is dropped, charges go ahead or advice is given to the AFP.

Labor frontbencher Tony Burke said Mr Slipper had already done the right thing by stepping aside from the Speaker's chair until legal matters involving him were resolved.

But Mr Burke would not speculate on what would happen to the finely balanced federal parliament if charges were laid and the matter went to court for criminal prosecution.

'The DPP will now make a decision whether charges will be laid,' he told the Seven Network on Friday.

'Right at the moment I don't want to get into speculation as to what they may or may not do. We can let that process unfold.'

Shadow treasurer Joe Hockey said it was not appropriate to speculate.

'Let's just let the DPP do his job and see where it falls,' he said.

Earlier, Liberal frontbencher Christopher Pyne said it would be 'very bad for the parliament' if Mr Slipper faced prosecution over the alleged rorting of his parliamentary entitlements.

The scandal was yet another reason why the government should call an election.

'I think the parliament is broken and the only way to fix it is (with) an election, to get confidence back into the economy and back into the parliamentary system,' Mr Pyne told the Nine Network.

Mr Pyne said he did not believe the journalist who wrote about the Slipper scandal should have to reveal his source.

Steve Lewis, from News Ltd, is arguing he should not have to comply with a Federal Court-issued subpoena that orders him to do so.

'I'd be very surprised if the court could enforce that,' Mr Pyne said, noting a long-standing tradition of journalists protecting their sources.

'Otherwise journalism will come to a grinding halt.'

Please tell us what paedophiles the ALP are covering up?   There have been pedophiles in the Labor movement that have felt the wrath of the courts.  So please name those that are being 'covered up'

No, that's right. Nobody could cover up paedophiles like you church types. It takes a real lack of moral integrity to do it that way.

My theory is that ash by is a jealous lover who found Slipper sleeping with another staffer, so did this as revenge.

you make a point but then most church's have a penchant for covering up..

we are talking about our ELECTED members of govt.

and Labor do their best to kill the whistle blower...something I detest.
