Clive Palmer For PM

Newman did it in Queensland, so Clive could do it federally.

Run for leader before being elected to parliament.

Pros and Cons of Clive Palmer being Leader of Australia.

Palmer sticks to his guns over lobbyists' roles in Liberal Party

THE bitter feud between Liberal Party life member Clive Palmer and senior Liberal figures will spill into the party's federal council meeting this weekend, with Mr Palmer saying his concerns about ''disgraceful'' internal conflicts of interest are being swept aside in favour of ''motherhood stuff about how Tony Abbott is a great leader''.

Mr Palmer wanted to propose a motion to the council banning party office holders from working as paid lobbyists, which would have disqualified two federal vice-presidents, former minister Alexander Downer and former senator Santo Santoro.

Although the resolution did not appear on the conference agenda yesterday, Mr Palmer told the Herald the Queensland Liberal National Party president, Bruce McIver, would still try to move it, because ''the current situation is scandalous … if you are a vice-president of a party you can pick up the phone to any minister or shadow minister, and if you are a lobbyist that is exactly what you also need to do to run your business''.

Sources confirmed to the Herald Mr Palmer's claim Mr Santoro had raised his lobbying business with the ABC chief executive, Mark Scott, and also some ABC board members, at the opening of the new ABC offices in Queensland in April.

Mr Santoro yesterday categorically denied the claim, saying he had neither formally nor informally offered to professionally lobby for the ABC.

But Mr Palmer said the alleged approach was ''the perfect example of what I have been saying. Advances such as these are a disgrace for any political party and Mr Santoro should discontinue lobbying or resign from the Liberal party executive immediately.''

Mr Palmer had a shouting argument with the Liberal leader, Tony Abbott, last week over the proposal. He said Mr Abbott had refused to allow anything to be put to the conference that would reflect badly on the party vice-presidents.

Publicly, Mr Abbott said: ''I think that there is no evidence whatsoever that any of the serving members of the executive have in any way been compromised.''

Mr Palmer described that response as ''bullshit'', saying the leader needed to explain why party executives should be allowed to take money to lobby their own party colleagues for policy outcomes.

But senior Liberals insisted there was no conflict of interest involved in vice-presidents being lobbyists because those party positions had no influence over policy issues.

And they said Mr Palmer was improperly using his influence as a major donor to the Liberal party to attempt to push the conference delegates to support his proposition.

Mr Santoro said that, as a registered lobbyist at a federal and state level, he abided by laws and codes of conduct, while ''many others regularly do things that could easily be defined as lobbying without being constrained by any such rules or constraints''.

Other sources said the spat had more to do with internal rivalries than any real concerns about propriety.

''This is just about Clive Palmer and the rest of those power-hungry idiots in the LNP trying to take over the federal party,'' one senior source said.

The national secretary of the Labor Party, George Wright, said no federal office holders, and to the best of his knowledge state party office holders, were paid lobbyists.

Palmer has obviously been buoyed by the way Campbell Newman rose to power in Queensland and he is looking at taking over from Abbott before the next election. He will be running in Swans seat and using his vast untaxed wealth to buy an election win.

I'm not so sure he would be worse for the country than Abbott ... at least he knows how to make a profit.

Having said that, neither of them will get my vote, they're both mad

Palmer is too fat - he'd have a heart attack.

He's also a greedy libbo.
