Controversial ad says eating a fish is like

Controversial ad says eating a fish is like bashing a granny

This is just ridiculous!

I just read "Why we should allow whaling" and I've got to say I am convinced - which I never thought I would be.

Can't say I've seen or heard this advertisement.  What sort of media is it on?

Whatever it is, it's not going to stop me eating fish anyway....

ANTI-VIOLENCE campaigners have slammed an animal rights advertisement that equates eating fish with the suffering of sexual assault and domestic abuse victims.

The video, made by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, shows a screaming girl watching a man beat her mother, an attacker grabbing an elderly woman's blouse, and a bloodied schoolboy being kicked to the ground. It then shows a fish on a chopping board, opening its mouth, with the words: ''Some screams can't be heard.'' The has been viewed almost 52,000 times on YouTube.

PETA is also urging supporters to tweet celebrity chefs such as Gordon Ramsay and Mario Batali, calling on them to ''put down the knife''.

Sorry Connie I can't post the link as I don't have enough posts yet.

Well, I'm all for preventing cruelty to animals, but I think this is going a bit too far.

I actually feel like having fish tonight for dinner - I have some salmon fillets in the fridge.....

I would have to compare it to "people who live in glass houses". I've lived outback, I've seen kangaroo kills and if you think every shot is clean and quick you are fooling yourself, in most (9 out of 10) cases the roo is "nicked" and a chase ensues. The roo is often skinned while it is still twitching.
We live in a real world not an ideal world, we have developed humane ways to kill our meats that are bred in captivity and we could develop more humane ways for wild beasts too but banning will never advance that.
Next would be "how dare we?" are we going to force feed people in India to eat beef or Jews or Islams to eat pork?

The worst are the people who take their omega 3 fish oil tablets.  Made from billions of the fish at the bottom of the food chain, leaving the fish on the higher rungs with nothing to eat.

These lame fads have a lot to answer for.

I remember my mother making me take fish oil capsules.  Can't say that she was able to convince me that they were any good for me though.  Sometimes I would throw them out instead of swallowing them.....

I agree th new red krill oil is a worry.

However it goes beyond that, I mentioned in another thread that I lived in the Gulf of Carpentaria in the 80's. For three months while I was there I joined some family members working on a prawn trawler, one of them had been on the trawlers twenty years before and was revisiting his youth. His comments on the missing species in the nets really hit home. No big swordfish in fact no swordfish at all is the only one I remember but he did mention others.
So it isn't just fads, it's over fishing.
To give credit where it is due Fisheries do have a quota system on the number of trawlers, the size of nets etc. Not sure what the current state of play is as it isn't really part of my life now.

Yeah back in 1989-90 the govt closed down 5 fishing companies (or made them move to another state) in darwin because the waters were getting fished out. The problem was also that other boats - from another country were fishing there too. I dont know if they have let them back in now.
