Undemocratic establishment media.
May 17th, 2012 at 3:00pm

All Australian TV networks have banned a Get Up! ad opposing pokies, for fear of upsetting Coles and Woolies. So much for Democratic country.

Yeah I heard about that the other day. Apparently they took it to channel 10 first and were refused then the others followed suit. Even though they had the money to pay for it. Cant say I am surprised though.

BTW Apparently they are putting it in cinemas in areas where there are a lot of gambling resources. Cinema advertising is supposed to be pretty good but well - ive never really liked it much. Your audience is just the kind of ppl with disposable income for going to movies.

Good for SBS, but this stinks. The rich are buying our freedom and trashing it.

*Sure....they're anti competitive as any subsidised job is.  It wouldn't be there without the tax payer.  Very damned difficult for a brainwashed collectivist to understand that I know....  (swaggy) *

Ad’s on the bloody TV all the time about problem gambling. Problem gambling stickers on all the machines, posters in the clubs, posters at the ATM’s.

Problem gamblers are morons.

A simple business decision.  A no-brainer.

Who's going to be of more value to commercial TV stations who rely on advertising to survive?  Coles and/or woollies or getup?  Business isn't supposed to be democratic, it's sole purpose is to make money.  Who pays the money gets their say.

Admittedly, I can't watch the ad on this computer, but can't see what purpose an ad opposing pokies would serve.  Can't see why it bothers you in WA where pokies aren't an issue either, grey.

You're right, for us in WA pokies aren't an issue. They've been deemed to be a bad thing by left and Right. But freedom of expression is an issue. If you can't buy dissent unless you're a billionaire and you can't protest on the street without being beaten by cops where does that leave democracy?

It leaves a situation where the only way to express dissent is to plant a bomb. Is that the society you want?

Who pays the money gets their say. is a fair thing. 'Not who pays and agrees with the establishment.' Media is and should be, controlled by government. The commercial networks are granted a licence and are expected to behave responsibly. This act of allowing vested interest to make their case but disallowing the public from expressing their opinion is new. To allow this state of affairs to continue is dangerously apathetic.

The private media sector does have responsibilities..that's why they are issued licenses that can be taken away.

Channel nine and ten bend over for Coles and Woolies so they don't buy them out. They are losing money left, right and centre, they can't afford to cross big business.

Not only can be, but SHOULD be.

The commercial networks should NEVER have even
had an OPTION on the new digital channels.

But money, especially corrupt money, doesn't
just talk, it bellows orders.

This is merely another example of how hard they SUCK!

The commercial channels are under no obligation to show any advertisement they don't want.

Can anyone dictate to you how to use your private possessions?
