Conservatives want Third World Australia

WORKPLACE Relations Minister and former union chief Bill Shorten has made a rousing speech to the ACTU Congress in Sydney, telling them unions were more relevant and important than ever.

But he has warned union chiefs at the conference that the Coalition is "energised and aggressive", and "believe they are just a whisker away from running Australia".

And he struck out at those he said were trying to "smear" the entire union movement over the Health Services Union affair.

Mr Shorten said unions should not listen to conservative commentators who were now regularly saying that the only way to make Australian workplaces more competitive was by cutting wages and conditions.

"Conservatives sell ... this myth that our workers can't compete ... unless we slavishly imitate the [work practices] of Third World nations," Mr Shorten said.

Liberals have signalled that they will attack workers' rights and slash social security so that we can be more like China. Is this what voters want?

Should Australia become more like China?

There's a consensus on this - "conservatives" aka the mainstream right want 3rd world working conditions, while progressives want it filled with 3rd world people.

Hockey says Coalition would cut welfare

Opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey has indicated a coalition government would look at cutting welfare and other entitlements to offset lower personal income and business taxes.

Mr Hockey on Wednesday told policymakers in Europe the "age of entitlement" in Western countries was over...

...But he said the problem in Australia was not as bad as many European countries where 20-30 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) was government welfare spending.

In Australia, the level is only 16 per cent of GDP.

However, Mr Hockey though there was still work to be done to reduce this.

"We need to compare ourselves with our Asian neighbours where the entitlements programs of the state are far less than they are in Australia," he said.

"If we talk about the Asian century ... then the Asian countries are our competition, our children's competition."...

...Mr Hockey refused to comment when asked about specific entitlements the coalition would get rid of...

Liberal states push IR reform

THE two most populous states have demanded the federal government overhaul the nation's industrial relations framework to increase productivity and clean up union inefficiencies.

Victoria and NSW yesterday launched a double-barrelled attack against the Gillard government's labour market agenda.

NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell accused the Gillard/Rudd governments of going too far with the Fair Work Act by winding back gains made by previous Coalition and Labor governments.

Mr Baillieu used a Liberal Party conference yesterday to declare that state governments wanted labour market reform as it related to construction to be placed on the next agenda of the Council of Australian Governments...

...His comments came as
Mr O'Farrell told Sky News's Australian Agenda that the Fair Work Act needed to be overhauled and predicted that Tony Abbott would back change
.

...

"I think it should be part and parcel of the federal opposition's argument about how we protect future productivity, future jobs and future opportunities in Australia," Mr O'Farrell told the program...

...While Mr Abbott has poured cold water on implementing individual contracts,
large slabs of the private sector are lobbying furiously for change
.

Abbott vows to tackle union 'militancy'

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says the coalition's workplace reforms would tackle flexibility and growing union "militancy".

Mr Abbott told a Queensland Liberal National Party meeting in Brisbane on Monday the coalition would not "go back to the past" in workplace relations, indirectly referring to the Howard government's Work Choices laws.

"But you all know that the pendulum having gone out here and has gone back right over to the other side and we need to bring it back to the middle," Mr Abbott said...

Workchoices had so much mud slung at it by the Unions in a deliberate smear campaign (read To the Bitter End) and it worked.

The actual concept of Workchoices is a good one.
To remove the third party influence, get Australians working to a more modern set of rules and regulations - give employers flexibility to respond to changed global market conditions etc.

I have worked my whole life on individual contracts with billion dollar multi-nationals.
Workchoices was about moving away from the rigid, stuck in the past 1970s style agreements and onto a more modern set of employment agreements as the norm.

It was a good thing.
But the Unions saw it as a threat to their power and chucked the kitchen sink at besmirching its name,

What the Howard Government's Industrial Relations Policy Did To Wealth Inequality In Australia:

Gap between rich and poor widens

August 3, 2007

...

Figures published yesterday showed the biggest increase in inequality was between 2003-04 and 2005-06, with a surge in income generated by the top 20 per cent of households.

In that time, low-income households gained a $24-a-week increase in average household income. The increase extended to $43 a week for middle-income households and $139 a week for high-income households.

This was an 8 per cent increase in income for low- and middle-income households, but for the wealthiest households the increase was 13 per cent, the Bureau of Statistics figures showed...

...In 2005-06 the top 20 per cent of households held 61 per cent of total household wealth, with an average net worth of $1.7 million per household. The poorest 20 per cent of households had an average net worth of $27,000, or 1 per cent of total household wealth.

The Prime Minister, John Howard, said last week that not everybody was sharing in the good economic times...

The world has changed and working practices have changed since the unionised days of the 1970s.

In the US office we roll our eyes when we hear how the AUS offices "can't come in on the weekend without paying the guys extra" or "we can't get rid of him without going down a formal 3 warning route"
etc etc etc

Australia needs to recognize the world has changed.
