Presidents in recent history who have met the Dalai Lama -

Barack Obama
George W Bush
William J Clinton
George H W Bush


George W Bush met the Dalai Lama in the Rotunda on Capitol Hill when the USA presented him with the Congressional Medal of Freedom.

Yeah - practicing and preaching....

and many times they refused or cancelled at the last minute.  Even you would have to agree that the US has no definite policy regarding supporting Tibet and the Dalai Lama and are just as tied to China's response as any other country.

By the way, without being too idealistic but this country is more than just a country.

America is an idea, its the shining city on the hill - the place people aspire to and to be a part.
It represents freedom, hope and democracy.

No matter where you are in the world, people know America and they want to be it.
It's the place of Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Nike, MTV etc

If you are in the Arab world, the jungles of Honduras, the middle of Niger or Chad, Singapore etc - they all have the culture of the United States and look to it.

The country is a beacon and an ideology.

Long may that remain the case.

People will never look to the People's Republic of China for such leadership.

If so many nations wanted to follow America's idealism, why are so many nations hating them?

Democracy is a French idea and the hamburgers are a German thing and freedom doesn't exist in America.

Isn't everyone in America about to be followed and monitored by the establishment? Freedom American style lol

An Oscar for Reagan's performance in that one. He wasn't such a bad actor after all, that was almost believable, then we remember it was acting.

The U.S. hasn't always supported democracy. There are countries that the U.S. government supports whose governments aren't democratic.

It's not like every country in the world is lining up for "Western democracy." Many Middle-Eastern (like Iran, Syria, Egypt, Jordan) and socialist countries (like Cuba) have elections and "democracy" but they are not like our's.

South-East Asian countries have democracies, but they also have capital punishment. An ethnically Asian Australian was executed in Singapore for taking drugs into an airport. Even the USA still has capital punishment in some States. Some of these SE Asian countries still have monarchs and if you criticise the king, expect to be executed or thrown into jail (I think it's Thailand).

Many of these countries demand "tough leaders," leaders who don't hesitate to intimidate, bully and blackmail others to get what they want, and it isn't inconceivable for China to start influencing these countries more than the USA. The Chinese government has a "strong face" that it presents to its people and to the world and this "strong face" seems to be behind its success. China's GDP has been growing steadily for several decades now. It's a result of "strong leadership." When a particular ideology is repeated often enough and its results are consistently and positively proven, that's enough for people to be converted and to continue to support it.

If the USA was to suffer a major military defeat in Asia and its military power was significantly weakened, China would start having more influence in the region. Its political philosophy would start influencing governments in Asia. People would forget about American freedom and start thinking about Chinese toughness. Democracy would cease to be seen as a path to justice and people will instead call for strong leadership with an iron grip.

Western democracy is over-rated. It isn't as if American democracy doesn't have its problems, like religious fundamentalism dominating or interfering with its politics. When politicians start talking about Jesus, how the country is "Christian" or opposing gay-marriage, you've got a problem. I don't know why Christianity keeps getting mixed up with the affairs of state. Blame the Roman Emperor Constantine.

All you have to do is eliminate the social/political infrastructure that prevents such gullibility from taking place: independent media, Constitution protecting human rights and supporting free speech, separation of powers, independent judiciary/courts, Miranda rights, limited arrest/search/interrogation powers for the police, privacy laws, a government open to public scrutiny and an education system that teaches people to think for themselves rather than indoctrinating them with nationalism and jingoism.

The people can't do anything against state propaganda if the system works against them.

Once you establish an iron grip on society, censor all sensitive information from the media and create a National Internet Firewall, all you have to do is eliminate the older generation -- those who remember what things were like before the iron grip started. The younger generation will grow up believing the lies. This is what happened in the last 20 years after Tiananmen Square. It's that easy. It's even easier when people don't want to know the truth.

Examples include the Great Omission from Japanese textbooks and the Great Firewall of China.

How many of us know what life was like 20-50 years ago? I can only find out from TV depictions, history books and informative web pages and YouTube videos.

The easiest way to get rid of democracy is to just turn off the Internet, close down all the media, all universities and replace them with organisations you trust will tell the people what you want. If a message is repeated often enough, people will then start believing it. Wait 20-50 years and see what happens. The fact that we need to be kept up-to-date with things just shows how easy it is to create misinformation.
