Father killed son in washing machine horror

POLICE in France have charged a 33-year-old father with murder after he allegedly killed his three-year-old son by stuffing him into a washing machine and turning it on.
The man, identified in reports as Christophe Champenois, was charged with "murder of a minor" late on Sunday (local time) in Meaux near Paris, court officials said.

The boy's mother was charged with failing to prevent a crime and failing to assist a person in danger.

Both were held without bail.

A source connected with the case said the child appeared to have died from "a blow to the head".

Neighbours said the boy, Bastien, died on Friday after his father put him naked in the washing machine to punish him for getting into trouble at nursery school.

A neighbour who gave her name only as Alice told journalists that she had seen the boy's body after his mother had come to her apartment for help.

"I took the little boy in my arms, he was frozen, completely naked. He was all white, limp, practically like a toy," said Alice, who lives in the same apartment building as the couple in Germiny L'Eveque, a town of 1300 people.

Alice said the boy's mother had attempted to resuscitate him with heart massage but failed.

A source connected with the inquiry said the man was denying the charges and asserting that the boy had fallen down the stairs.

But witness testimony and tests on the body were "consistent with the fact that the child was put into a washing machine", the source said, adding that the boy had been repeatedly abused, including by being locked up for hours in a cupboard.

A local official, Christine Boubet, said social services had assisted the family since 2006 "for social and psychological distress".

Since the end of the school holidays earlier this month Bastien's school, parents and sister had noticed a change in the boy's behaviour as he was more "disturbed, careless and a problem for his parents," Boubet said.

Dreadful and disturbing.

One wonders why and how a person can do this to such a vulnerable and defenceless human being.

The fact that the culprit is a parent .. makes this tragedy only more horrific and disgusting.

Also makes you wonder what may have happened to the older children...

They've been getting 'counselling' since 2006, and the poor little tyke was only 3..

Infanticide is far less common than what it used to be. The reason this incident has got coverage outside France is because of the unusual murder weapon.

Go back a century or two before the establishment of police forces and you'll find a homicide rate many, many times greater than what it is now.

It is lower than it used to be, but I think it might be on the rise again in the west.  As developing countries develop, more and more people are lifted out on the kind of poverty that led to infanticide in times past so it is probably declining in these countries.  But, this case is unusual in that it appears to be his own father, not stepfather who killed him.  Child abuse, including infanticide is far more often committed by stepfathers/mothers than by their own flesh and blood, so with the recent rise in divorce nad "blended" families in the west, we can probably look forward to more infanticide.  Hooray for progress!

The west still has a declining homicide rate - especially in the US.

The physical number of infanticides per year here has remained pretty much the same for the past few decades (around 25 per year) - despite the increasing population.
