I've got newly discovered cousins in Toronto and Vancouver. A Doctor 'this' and a 'Professor' that. http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr96/Herbert_04/cool_man_2.gif No cheap-and-nasty cousins for me, thank you very much ...

I once read that during WWII over 1,000 pilot trainees were killed in the UK during training sessions before they even had a chance to fly off to fight the Germans. That is just such an appalling figure.

I don't know but they were hell raisers and it is appalling if true.  My Dad instructed in the UK before he was sent to Canada.

Just as well he moved. Never before or since the war did the English pubs do such a roaring trade. "Drink up, lads - for tomorrow we may die!"

The Free French, the Poles, Aussies, Kiwis, Canadians, the local lads - from my reading it was singing around the pub piano with pints in hand every night they weren't on ops. That's when they weren't dancing with the girls down at the Palladium or the Trocadero or wherever - to the sounds of Glenn Miller and ... the others.

You could hardly blame them. Every sortie could be their last.

You've heard of 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof'?

Well, here's Kat on a hot steel foot-plate, chatting with the driver of vintage steam loco 3016.

I didn't know you're a hippy.

Don't let Marla catch sight of you here, or you'll never hear the last of it even though you've got the 'Socialism IS the answer' banner that will warm the cockles of her heart.

I clearly remember the many times I got cinders in my eyes from leaning out the doors of coal-fired steam engines taking me across the English countryside to and from Boarding School in the latter half of the '50's.

I apologise. My 'bad' - and I will not repeat this breach of .. er ... whatever.

Is Socialism the answer? Hell, maybe it is. But then what happens when you don't reward people for trying to rise above the Common Herd? What happens to 'incentive' if striving for excellence is liable to get you shot for 'elitism'? (Pol Pot)

I wear glasses ... (intellectualism) - *BANG* - I'm dead.
I read books ... (ditto the above)  - ditto the above.
I have soft hands unlike a labourer - (elitist anti-proletariat) - ditto the above.
I refuse to wear a one-size-fits-all uniform as in North Korea - (Reactionary individualism) - ditto the above.

And so on and so forth.

Read a proper god damn history book on socialism sometime, not what your corporate news machine tells you. This is exactly the sort of crap I expect from bogarde and his brand of lazy conservative ilk.

How about basic social rights? The right to a decent job with a living wage AND to education and access to culture and leisure facilities - necessities of life in a complex, modern society.

Typical hippie. A society which is organized on the basis of social need and not private profit can only grow and survive.

My reply has disappeared into the ether. The 'History' utility in the Menu Bar is worthless so far as bringing back a post that hasn't yet been SENT.

And what the hell does 'Social need' mean? WHO decides what each individual's 'social need' is? And THERE, dear Marla, is where this Paradise in the Clouds crashes and burns in the REAL world outside of romantic fiction.

Back to the drawing board, sister.

Ah - me grandfather was a Special Class (Salaried) Driver and ran the Newcastle to Sydney Flyer.... I had the privilege of going to the museum at Thirlmere and standing on the footplate of an engine he once drove..... I tell yez I could feel his presence there....

He most likely drove any of those classes shown, since he was a top man in the job.... nowadays a train drive ain't nothin' but a hack what pushes a few buttons....

How things change.. and not always for the better..... now the kids all want to be doctors and layers .. oops.. silly me.. LAWYERS and such... and they ain't got one clue....

I don't think so.  The AD60s (the large articulated locomotives in the last two photos) were built for long haul freight trains, and 3016 was one of the C30T class that was mainly used on small branch lines, and occasionally on suburban goods trains (there was one at Darling Harbour towards the end of steam that also took turns shunting carriages at Sydney Terminal (or Central as it is now called).
