One Bolt - and a Few Nuts
May 10th, 2011 at 12:57am

Not having seen every attempt at television current affairs in Australia, it is impossible to judge The Bolt Report the worst. But surely it comes close.

Andrew Bolt’s Sunday morning shift from panellist on ABC Insiders to his own show on
Network Ten has brought talk-back to TV, but it didn't bring a pulse.

It is named for Bolt, hosted by Bolt, and dominated by the Boltian worldview.

It featured white middle-aged men talking about Boltian fundamentals - namely, the great climate change con and those refugees taking over the country - with a surfing Afghan refugee beamed in to be scolded for high unemployment among his compatriots.

The most interesting aspect of the first instalment is whether there will be a second. In its favour is that there are so few people who watch TV on Sunday mornings, it doesn't really matter what is on the screen. Perhaps Ten could try the test signal next week for a livelier program

Bolt's skill is to write the
outrageous and craft an agenda, often based on "facts" which are little more than fantasy
. He allowed
his first guest, Tony Abbott
, for instance, to bag the government’s climate change ambassador, Tim Flannery, for his recent comment that global climate action would have no effect for 1000 years.

Bolt, among the most ideological of interviewers, was never going to point out that
Flannery didn’t say that
. His point was that while climate action would not reduce average global temperatures for as many as 1000 years, such action is aimed at mitigating further temperature increases.
But that does not fit Boltian fundamentals.

He must have been delighted to hear of Julia Gillard’s announcement on Saturday of a plan to swap some 800 asylum seekers for 4000 refugees with Malaysia. It duly dominated the program, with
Abbott parroting Bolt’s lines
, and Liberal powerbroker
Michael Kroger joining the show alongside Mark Latham to furiously agree about how shockingly bad the government was.

It is hardly basking in glory right now, but general agreement is
generally dull
, which is The Bolt Report in two words. Bolt is not dull. But if his show continues in this fashion, it will prove only that he was better off where he was on Sunday morning, playing the contrarian on the ABC.

And if Network Ten gave Bolt a show to give us a reason to tune in on Sunday mornings, we still don’t have one.

A little hint here Buzz.  Large, bold and coloured fonts do not make up for lack of substance.

Sadly I did, and yes, it was as bad if not worse than that article (admittedly biased as you would expect) portrayed.

The videography, sound track and wooden performance of the "host" would be hard to beat if you where doing a satirical version!

Yes it was a great show wasn't it.
And who'd have thought that Mark Latham would be able to contribute as he did.
Looking forward to the next show already.

For those who missed it can catch it here

It appears that Andrew Bolt certainly does not suit the Left's agenda at all.
Perhaps they could get their own tree hugging program together.

What did anyone expect when Packer and Murdoch brought channel 10.....It was exactly what I expected.....Andrew Bolt has nothing to offer main stream Australia and verges on the fringe of extremism.....Cannel 10 is already showing signs of turning into a puppet for the Packer and Murdoch empires....Even the 7-30 report is now showing political bias against the Government....Wait and see what other gems these fat elitist scum bags force upon the faithful and stupid!!!

So who's left on any Channel that still supports the government?

The addition of Andrew Bolt's new show to Sunday mornings is a major departure from regular Ten fare. Its current Sunday mornings consist of Meet the Press at the ungodly hour of 8:00am and then music videos to fill out the remaining hours.

This change of philosophy has come out of nowhere from the point of view of most observers, and could be put down to the
addition and influence of Gina Rinehart to the Ten Network Holdings board.

Certainly, sources from within the company say that the pursuit of Bolt had
Rinehart's tick of approval.

The mining magnate and climate change denier being able to directly influence what programming can and should air on the network is one thing.
But to influence the news department and the hiring of a columnist with no hosting experience and a journalistic background plagued with scandal, outrageous articles and trips to the courts is something else.

The hiring of Andrew Bolt could be seen as a push against the Prime Minister's carbon tax proposal, which both Bolt and Rinehart fiercely oppose.
Could Rinehart's main interest in Ten be its news department, and the ability to dictate the stories that air and the personalities that deliver them: all to push her own interests?

As Rinehart's mining company Hancock Prospecting said last year after buying into Ten: "Our company group is interested in making an investment towards the media business given its importance to the nation's future and has selected Channel 10 for this investment."

If this is what Rinehart had in mind, then
we are heading into worrying times
for the network and the state of news in this country. The hiring of Bolt could just be the start of other changes -
with a Murdoch and a Magnate on the board, are diverse opinions welcome at Ten anymore?

After
Bolt's fierce tirade
on what was possibly his last appearance on the
ABC's Insiders
, how could he have been seen a stable host of a political television program?

Shows in the vein of what we can expect from Bolt are big ratings hits in the United States: particularly on
Rupert Murdoch's Fox News Channel
, where cable kings Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity eat up ten hours of primetime television each week combined.

Hannity in particular parrots talking points almost straight out of the Republican strategy book. Attacking the left on topics such as patriotism and, oh yes, climate change.

Is this the kind of programming Australians will warm to, especially at 10am on a Sunday morning?

Can someone from the right please explain the attraction of commentators like Bolt?

Do you perceive that there is a leftie commentator in a similar role?
