114 Sales And Customer Service Staff Out Of Work

The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) has slammed a Telstra decision to close the Moe, Victoria call centre throwing 114 sales and customer service staff out of work.   Sad

The union says the closure is major blow to regional workers.

CPSU staff are now meeting with members who were told the devastating news at lunch time.   Sad

The CPSU understands that staff were told the centre is closing because there is not enough work.

“It’s a difficult line for these loyal employees to accept because they’ve always had a heavy workload and there has been no change to that,” CPSU Telstra lead organiser Teresa Davison said.

The Moe call centre faced a similar challenge in 2005 when Telstra moved to shut it then. The CPSU mounted a successful community campaign which helped keep the centre open.

Telstra says it will move some of the 114 jobs to capital cities in Australia, but the CPSU is calling for a guarantee from Telstra that work will not be transferred off shore.

“It is our experience that over time these jobs do end up off shore. So not only is this a blow to the Moe community, but it means more frustration for Telstra customers trying access customer service and support.

“The community has every right to feel angry at Telstra's hypocrisy. They say they are absolutely committed to regional Australia and then make a blunt and heartless decision to cut jobs in Moe.   Angry

“114 job losses is a huge kick in the guts for Moe. It's not just the staff who are affected - it's local businesses, cafes, contractors who look after the building.   Sad

“With an NBN deal and a lucrative wireless project underway, Telstra’s decision to sack these hard working employees is just appalling.

“It’s time Telstra told us the true extent of its commitment to regional Australia, because it says one thing and does another,” Ms Davison said.   Sad

Sometimes I think they should have sold 100% of Telstra - It may have fixed the worst management team in Australia.

Given the slow and poor service at the local Telstra call centres its really no surprise that they are going offshore where not only are the costs cheaper but the service is streets ahead.
Surely, if people here were being honest with themselves, when did you ever get decent and efficient service at a Telstra call centre?

Cods, if a whole town has made itself dependent on a telstra call centre that doesnt say much for the local council.

This has to be a joke.  What does the Local Council have to do with it?

Local Councils do have the power to attract and facilitate the activities of businesses - especially since there tends to be a dodgy infiltration by the Local Chambers of Commerce amongst Councilors...

Ballarat Trades & Labour Council sacks Telstra

02 Mar, 2011 01:02 AM

THE Ballarat Trades & Labour Council has sacked Telstra.
Council secretary Paul Clempson said the move comes after the loss of 80 contract staff from Telstra's Wendouree call centre in January.

"If you treat people inappropriately and expect to get away with it, then you're living in a bit of a funny world," Mr Clempson said.

"They (Telstra) think people don't care, but they do care.

"If you hand out a kicking, don't expect others to cosy up."

Mr Clempson said local service providers will be used for the council's landline, internet and mobile services, and he urged other people to follow its lead.

"This Australian company ties us up in contracts to use their products, then turns around and takes away the livelihood and income from people we know, perhaps our friends or relations, that actually work in these areas.

"Well, enough is enough. If they want our business, they've got to look after their workers.

"In the chase for profit, it is unacceptable for Telstra to sack local people and move their work outside Australia.

"Individuals, businesses and community organisations should all consider the ramifications of Telstra's actions."

The 80 sacked workers were employed through Dorothy Farmer Personnel, which contracts staff to Telstra.

Mr Clempson said Telstra was no longer the "force they once were" and people now had other options for their telecommunication services.

"I strongly urge businesses in these areas to think about who supports your enterprise. People with jobs have more disposable income than those not working."

Telstra spokeswoman Karina Keisler yesterday said they were disappointed to lose a customer and would speak with Mr Clempson to explain the reasons behind their "difficult decision".
