American Football In Australia

How popular is it? Also looks like my plans to come down to the land down under have changed looking at the demographic change in Australia. Unless you can get more highly skilled and intelligent people to become citizens in your country I don't see it ending well. You should make a campaign to get all the good south Africans  and brits and germans and americans who are watching their homelands become a third world country. Make Australia this new place to start and get it right. And get rid of Compulsory Voting it is Barbaric!!

We do have a couple of tv channels that broadcast the NFL from the states, but outside of the US & canada, no-one actually plays gridiron.

If you are moving here, I suggest following Rugby League, which, like gridiron has its roots in rugby, believe it or not.

Avoid chick sports like AFL.  Grin

I think my father mentioned that an attempt was made to start a gridiron comp in the Sydney area but due to lack of players the idea fizzled out. Gridiron in Oz would be like cricket in the USA: both are treated as a novelty.

Not too long ago, Aussie women were padding their shoulders like grid iron players in the "self assertion" stampede.  Since then the extra padding has submitted to gravity somewhat.

Dunno if it's still happening, but there was a healthy gridiron comp in Newcastle.

I think that's about the only place where the game got any kind of popularity - they used to get a thousand or two spectators at each game.

I always liked the Buffy the Vampire comment on gridiron.....

Giles said it best...."I just think it's rather odd that a nation that prides itself on its virility should feel compelled to strap on forty pounds of protective gear just in order to play rugby."

A mate who played rugby union for the Aus navy tells how once they played the Yanks grid iron team two days running by one code on the first day, then the other on the next. They flipped a coin to decide which code went first.

As it turned out, they played rugby the first day, for which he`s eternally gratefull.  He said that without the Septics being knocked around the day before in rugby,  he would have definitely (just about) died in the grid iron game.

Gridiron's a lot faster than either of the rugby codes, and the players "bounce" around a lot more. There would far too many horrible injuries without the padding.

To the OP: gridiron is broadcast on our pay TV frequently, we get a pretty reasonable number of games, the timing isn't too bad either (Monday night football being on Tuesday morning here is great).

Gridiron has always had a healthy participation in Australia ever since the late Don Lane introduced it. It was when Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins were doing their time.

Gridiron is much like Cricket besides being lengthy and slow. It has a lot of Statistics involved and step by step strategies.

I think Australia could field a very competitive side against the USA quite well. I remember Darren Bennet (as the kicker) drilling some dude who ran into the clear - knocked the guy out instantly with the commentators screaming "Kickers can't do that!" as in, being that effective.

Do to the 'Specialisation positions' of the NFL game - we would probably find participation from all of our codes.

...I honestly think Australia would win the first game between the two nations, mainly because Southern Hemisphere sportsmen are a bit more 'physical' in their style. Look at the Rugby Union 'Super & Tri-nations' comps, the Aussie Rules against the Irish, the League, the Cricket (mostly) and I would say the Socceroos too - but they keep putting guys who play in the Northern Hemisphere in the team which is why they still cry and play like 'overpaid' poofs. New Zealand got their soccer right - they just fielded a side of 'localised' players for the All-Whites.

You don't watch much football (soccer), do you?

Of course compulsory voting is democratic.

And it produces a far more representative democracy .
