It is more meaningful than what we have now surely.

The Queen has no relevance here anymore.

What sort of Republic?
I can't imagine a model that we will be offered where I'm not going to feel cheated by the result or the process or probably both.
If they just mean a replacement of the GG with a President where the public have no say...No.
If they mean a Republic where you get offered a choice of candidates by the government of the day...No.
If they mean a Republic where you get offered a choice of candidates that have been nominated by the public and the government/parliament whatever picks a couple from the list...then...No
If they just want someone ceremonial with no power...why bother...No.

I don't only want a right to choose a candidate, if I get a vote, that is acceptable to the government but especially one that is not. Why should a bunch of machiavellian a/wipes get to choose and say it is because we have "grown up" as a society? It is just replacing one paternalism with another.
I don't get to vote for any prospective PM unless I reside in their electorate. Why would I want a President where I get no real say either. If that is the case then the UK pay for the Monarch and we would have to pay for the President so on the basis of what do I care and a prospective saving of how many odd dollars it costs to shine the harse of some degenerate goverment toady I wouldn't vote for a Republic.

In a nutshell...

It ain't broke, so why 'fix' it???

The system we have now really doesn't involve Her Majesty The Queen all that much....unless the PM seriously screws up and needs to be kicked..

So the Queen is a failsafe..

In America (as an example) it takes (potentially) years of court proceedings and a majority of Congressmen to kick a bent President out of office...look at Watergate......
Here it takes a phone call...Look at the Whitlam Dismissal..

The Queen does not act of herself - she is obligated to act on the advice of the GG to dismiss the government or alternatively the PM can ask the Queen to sack the GG. It was not for the Queen to say no. So in reality it was the 100% decision of the GG Kerr. No doubt there would be no power under a government manifesto for the President to sack the PM.

Whats with all this USA 'President' stuff, it almost like running from the UK nothing to the USA nought at the end.
Face it - the Prime Ministers serve the USA and the Gov-Generals serve the UK and the UK do exactly what the USA says anyway... Roll Eyes

Australian Republic? Yeah sure.

Whats with this "If it ain't broke - don't fix it!" ?
Ever heard of stagnant waters? Me thinks there are a lot of people who don't want to be pushed from their comfort zone. The 'lazy' Aussie with a Beer in his hand saying "Don't change ...don't change". Well that may be so. So don't tell him he's 'broke'. Roll Eyes or he might ask for 'change'.

Firstly though, we need a 'political' Australian to die upon the Southern Cross for everyone's political sins and justify an explosion of breeding based upon the political way - hence why there is an increase in females in the Political and Police industries. (We all know men can't cope with 'domestic' issues  Wink)

POWER TO THE PEOPLE is what the Australian Republic would be based upon ...in other words, Chairing the Republic would be a 'volunteer/privaledged' position.
There would be a representative that holds the Republic together and a representative that deals with interactions with other nations - both of these cater to the whim of the people.

I've gone into detail upon previous topics but let me just say this - Australia will become a Republic (because the 'world' has a say in Australia's future as well you know ...or haven't you raised your head up?)
and it will have an 'advancement' of the current Flag (yep - I've got that in the bag too)
and it will have a 'updated' name (no longer South Land, let alone South Asia  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes ...in Latin)

NOTE: If you ask a lot of British people these days - most will tell you that they think Australians are "a bunch of Tossers and that they want their Union Jack back ya worthless theives!"

The Aboriginal/Koori Flag? Well most 'original' Aboriginals base their existence upon the 'Land' not Politics so the idea of the Koori Flag being a Political expression is kinda silly ...especially when Koori is just 'one tribe' out of many (its like saying Apache represented all Namerindians). The Union Jack represented bringing Politics into the World these last 500 years.

Australia Day should be called "Political Day" - because that's what is being celebrated ...and why not - seems everywhere else, Politics gets a bad wrap for being 'evil, corrupt and power-mongering'. Here, it might get some good vibes of being 'love, family, joy, etc'. Smiley

....I think people need to look at how the World works and you will see how this Country works in the scheme of things.
There's a little Shire known as ACT, where little people live in their little world, little realising that the rest of the world sees Australia as an Artistic nation aided by the Internet (rather than the TV) that will achieve something that Minoa failed to reach.

Don't get me wrong, Australia NEEDS Politics - even if it is feminised, full of love, about family values and friends to Dolphins.

Ahhh, if only you guys know what I know about the future of this country  Wink Cool and I do my best to translate.

...hows that for a rant Wink Grin Cheesy
