Worker Killed/ That Will Be A $120,000 Fine Please
Nov 27th, 2010 at 6:12am

A large timber products company has been fined for failing to provide a safe workplace at its Latrobe Valley mill in south-east Victoria.

Timber worker Michele Cooper was killed as she was trying to un-jam a wood-stacking machine at the Carter Holt Harvey mill at Morwell in January 2008.

The Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court heard the company had a strong emphasis on workplace safety but it failed to identify safety issues with its wood-stacking machines.

Magistrate Fiona Hayes said no-one witnessed the accident but it is believed Ms Cooper was crushed by the machine's hoist as she freed the jammed timber with a hammer.

A report tendered in court found flaws in the machine's design led to the accident.

Ms Hayes said Carter Holt Harvey faced a maximum penalty of $275,000 but found it had improved safety at the site.

The company was fined $120,000 for failing to provide a safe workplace.

Well I suppose I could have put it there.  Then again though that is more about a greens policy.  Where this is about an accident that has happened.

Ok fair enough.

Nice to know that a person's life was valued at only $120,000.

I bet his family are pleased.
Be able to get that new plasma.

We have the Greens, the Reds (ALP) and the Blues (Liberals).

Is there a purple party, such a nicer colour.

What about the Sex Party Misandrist? They would suit a hot colour - perhaps a puce pink - an attention seeking colour.

Sawmills are dangerous places, some people can work in them for a lifetime without misshap, others can`t.  Always very sad when things like this happen.

Yes, and even then the warnings and procedures need to be observed.
Some do become apathetic or lackadaisical.
Even to the extent of alcohol, drug  and/or medication consumption.

So true Anne, workers are human, and their human errors will for ever cause risk of accidents.
RIP.
