Australia leads in multiculturalism

Quote:
Australia is a world leader in multiculturalism, with most newcomers hailing from England, New Zealand and China, a report has found.

A whopping one quarter of the total population is born overseas, far ahead of other OECD countries which average 11 per cent.

A large majority of those entering the nation do so under the skilled migration program, making up about 62 per cent - or 115,000 people - of the total intake in 2008, according to the latest AMP.NATSEM Income and Wealth Report.

England and NZ remain the two major source countries, totalling about 30 per cent, while in the decade to 2006, China toppled Italy for third place, accounting for five per cent of those relocating Down Under.

But the nation's humanitarian intake amounted to just seven per cent, with asylum seekers totalling about one fifth or less of this group.

Overall, Australia has a ratio of 10 refugees per 10,000 head of population, compared to 87 per 10,000 in Sweden and 50 per 10,000 in Canada, the report found.

And it appears in many cases the skills of highly educated newcomers from non-English speaking countries are not being utilised, NATSEM author and research fellow Riyana Miranti said.

About 38 per cent of people in that category were found to be working in low or medium skilled occupations, compared to 19 per cent of Australian-born tertiary-educated people aged 35 to 54.

About 20 per cent of migrants from mainly English speaking countries in that age group were working in low-or medium skilled jobs.

The Calling Australia Home report, released on Wednesday, also showed non-migrant households are wealthier than migrants in general, but the scenario was reversed when judged on property assets alone.

Migrant households led their Australian-born counterparts with $262,700 in property compared to $250,800 for non-migrant households, the data revealed.

AMP Financial Services managing director Craig Meller said migration had significantly contributed to the country's economic well being and culture.

"Migration is embedded in our history ... and will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping Australia's longterm future," he said.

The majority of data used in the report is sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2006 Census of Population and Housing, and unit record data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey.

And of course from all reports Sweden will be a Muslim nation within 50 years and lose their national identity, and so they are certainly working hard to acheive that aim.
Personally I don't see why Australians would want that to occur here.
With a small population base with an even smaller workforce with little onshore industry left, Australia cannot afford to carry a large population of people who cannot speak English and are uneducated or untrained.
These 3rd world people cannot help with this nations skills shortage, so more people on the dole will help how?
We will always take in a small percentage of asylum seekers from these backward countries, but we certainly cannot afford to get the intake numbers wrong.

Out of all the immigrants, only one fifth are asylum seekers. I can't see how we are getting  flooded by them. It's really very few in the scheme of things. How long would it take to fill the MCG if all the asylum seekers were seated there?

Other over populated and poor countries take a much bigger percentage than we do.

How many pop over from the UK by plane, with a tourist visa and never leave? They don't see the inside of a detention centre because they have the right coloured skin.

Media hysteria. People should learn to do some research and add up the numbers, they'd be surprised how few asylum seekers actually arrive on our shores.

The reason you don't have a job is not because of the asylum seekers.

I will give full credit to the first person that declares they are xenophobic. Come on be honest to yourself.

Visa overstayers won't be locked up Instead they will be invited in for chat May get temporary bridging visas

ILLEGAL immigrants will no longer be locked up and deported when caught by authorities, in a major softening of immigration procedures.

Instead, people who overstay their visas will be invited into an immigration office and could even get temporary bridging visas.

Immigration officers have been instructed not to detain visa violators unless they are known to be violent criminals or have previously been instructed to leave.

Until last week, illegal foreigners were immediately detained at detention centres and put on planes home within weeks.

The new approach is in line with a general softening of immigration policy by the Rudd Government.

Under the policy, officers are required to issue illegal foreigners with bridging visas and work with them to get them home.

"We basically have to invite them into the office for a coffee," an insider within the department said.

"They can get a couple of weeks or six months, whatever it takes to get them home without detaining them."

Mandatory detention was axed last year, but until now only asylum seekers have been allowed to live in the community.

The new directive from Immigration Minister Chris Evans' office was issued to immigration officers verbally last week.

There are almost 50,000 visa overstayers living illegally in Australia.

More than one in 10 is from China.

Entrants from the US, Malaysia and Britain are also big overstayers.

Most come in on tourist visas, but about 3600 are foreign students who disappear into the community when their course is over.

The Government has also closed down offshore processing facilities on Nauru and Manus Island.

Senator Evans' directive has divided opinion within department ranks, with some fearing the softer approach could send a dangerous message.

"I guess it says people can pretty much do whatever they want now," the insider said.

"They've been caught, but they can stay and go home when they want."

The move could open the floodgates for unwelcome visitors.

"It certainly could be open for exploitation," the insider said. "Prisons are not nice places to be in. Many of these people are not criminals, but I guess it doesn't convey a strong message."

Senator Evans said detention would only be used as a last resort.

"The presumption will be that persons will remain in the community while their immigration status is resolved," he said.

"If a person is complying with immigration processes and is not a risk to the community, then detention in a detention centre cannot be justified.

"The department will have to justify a decision to detain - not presume detention."

Go tell the Dept. of Immigration that they are the lower echelons of society. I'm actually embarrassed for you.

And how many use NZ as a transit lounge?

Quote:
NZ Speak of ‘Back Door Entry’ to Australia

In a spate of New Zealand newspaper articles, New Zealand’s revenue minister, Peter Dunne, has described his country as a giant transit lounge as many immigrants ended up moving to Australia after stopping off in NZ.

Mr Dunne told Wellington’s Dominion Post, that nearly 20 per cent of the 37,000 New Zealanders, who went to Australia last year, permanently or for a year, were born outside New Zealand.

He says “New Zealand provides back-door entry to Australia because it has less strict immigration criteria…Most of those who moved to Australia in 2007 after immigrating to New Zealand were born in South Africa, followed by India and then England.”

http://www.globalvisas.com/blog/immigration-to-australia-via-nz-a-popular-route.html

It's hard to gauge the correct figure of NZ born people moving to Australia. As the article suggests some 'NZers' take out NZ citizenship and before the ink dries on their paperwork they hop on a flight/boat to Oz.

With about 140 differient cultural groups/nationalities/racial groups in Oz the word isn't xenophobia; it's xenomania.
