Its at the point now I dont really bother reading papers much, nothing is news.  Its all about Sport (I dont mind the back stuff, but not even that is sports news anymore, its all just grandstanding opinion peices from ex-players or wanna bes), WAG's, who's marrying/cheating/divorcing who and celebrities.

I used to spend a good hour reading the papers each day, now its a flick at morning tea

I understand what you are saying about sport in news. They have been doing it for years...it seems like the sports news starts about 10 minutes into every 30 minute news service.

It is especially noticable to those of us that generally cannot stand sport but to bang on about the ABC doing Abblet stories ..... crikey how do you think I feel, the only two radio stations I listen to are ABC and Radio National and we are coming to the time of the year when one has the friggin cricket on day after day and the other one will probably be playing friggin jazz. The most poo game and the most poo music in tandem.

As for Gary Abblet..he is a spectacular player to watch and one of the true elites of the game..I will make the trip down to the Gold Coast to watch him when I can. AFL is pretty much the only sport I can stand to watch (although Union at it's BEST is pretty exciting as well) other than motorcycle road racing.

Go Saints...please please please break Collingwood's heart.

The French have the great artists and philosophers of the renaissance period to copy from and live up to.
Unfortunately we have the worst of the worst of British breeding to live down to. We have no cultural heritage....yet.  We are trying to invent one, a great sporting nation. It's not working very well because too many of 'our great sporting legends' (not my words) , mostly AFL and Rugby League players, are ending up before the courts for all sorts of misdemeanour's.

We need to focus on something else for a national identity, if we really need one.

Yes Nail - we're so good at sport.
I wish we would apply the same resources to science.
Maybe I'd get a higher paying job if they did.

So who are the real idiots now, player-haters?

Is it any wonder that after a week of work and being involved all of the bs that goes with it, listening to politicians, watching unrealistic soapies, reality shows and media advertising, and all of the other crap around, that a lot of people enjoy unwinding to watch the honesty of sportsmen that have trained and practised extremely hard for the simple objective of getting the most from themselves during a footy match?

If it were so simple to earn a million a year for simply kciking a footy around then everybody would be doing it.
It's a mistake also to treat them all as meatheads.
Besides the outside studies that a lot of them partake in, probably every one of them these days would have a better idea on how to get the most from themselves physically and how to keep themselves in good physical condition throughout their lives than the most avid fitness buff.

Add to that the work that they do for charities and for schools to get kids into sports and fitness, they contribute quite a lot to Australia and other neighboring countries.

Australian Sport is an amazing thing.
It isn't the be all and end all of Australian culture ...it shares its part of the pie graph with a lot of other things.

Gee, hasn't the Sports Codes changed over the years.
I remember when the Rugby Union boys would have top quality Universitised Careers to support their 'amatuer' (non-paid) Rugby Tours to represent our Country - now they are professionally paid blokes with no personality at all.
The 'Professional' Rugby League Players still had to work dead-beat pleb jobs on the side after Footy - now they are paid full-time and they just don't know what to do with themselves after footy besides get into strife.
The Aussie Rules boys would go to Uni, but only have jobs rather than Careers and now its all about pretending to be bigger than Hollywood.
The Cricketers did ok, as long as they bowed down to the Lords - but they too think that 'Celebrity' and Bio-Books are instant rewards after just a few Tests.

Things change.
We see the insecure National Redneck League (you know the ones that like to dress in drag on footy shows) feel threatened by the so-called GayFL.
Funny, I always thought that the epithany of Rugby League was Test Level, especially against the Brits ...but it seems that the Grand Final is more important than a Kangaroo Tour nowadays.
I think people of Rugby League (like Wayne Bennett) who feel threatened by AFL are those who place importance upon a Grand Final win rather than a Test win ...of which AFL has always 'ruled' the 'Domestic Club Level' scene ...they even have a movie called "The Club".
AFL left its little 'world' of Melbourne and even branched out into International Tests against the Irish.
Rugby Union seems more successful nowadays with its State and Provincials (Sa &NZ) Competition, just down from the Tri-Nations.
...having seen the Victorian Rugby style before (they play much like Rugby League 'ironically' = non-running rugby ), the Kiwi sides will find the Vics a tough customer indeed ...which is probably why they have done a few America's Cup ventures in making sure the Vics don't play.

Nowadays, we see Referees & Umpires to afraid of making decisions ...its all back to Mr Television. Who bothers to go to Football these days anyway?

I think if we had the World Cup Soccer here. Everyone would find the 'aggressive and physical' nature of Australian Sports somewhat daunting, but at least for the first time, Refs will be pressured to penalise 'Divers' more than Tacklers.

Strange how Rugby League now scores the majority of its 'tries' via 'kicks' and especially to the corner where players must take 'marks' to score.
Strange how we hardly see great 'Leaping' in AFL anymore?
Strange how Australian Cricketers go on about the blight of Indian poverty, yet take millions to go play their local Competition ...even after being called a 'Monkey'.
I think they are all good Sports, but since the 90's they have deteriorated in quality although there has been much 'expansionism' going on. The concept of 'Video' Decisions is a joke!

The only safe exercise is walking - even then you
can sprain your ankle on an uneven surface.

What about swimming?
Now they find that you can develop an enlarged heart -
look at Dawn Frazer.
Also the chlorine in the water damages your lungs.
They used chlorine in WW1 as a chemical weapon to
destroy the lung lining - go figure that one out.


Let's take tennis as an example.
The winner has to be able to get to the ball faster than their opponent.
That means putting enormous strain on the knees as the body pushes
off in strange directions.
Eventually the knees give out leaving life long injury.

Also - I have a stupid brother who ran marathons.
Now his hips click every time he walks.
All the cartilages are worn out.
The body is not like a machine with replaceable parts.

'Excessive' participation in Sports can result in 'long term' damage.

Sports is there to become 'fit' more than anything else it offers in the world. How it is done is subject to variety and enjoyment. I'm currently in Daniel Geales gym once a week to get my 40 year old body 'fit' again ...the perk is tow 'learn a few boxing tricks' along the way (if needed ) - but there is now way I will push myself 'beyond my limits'. what for? I have all the time to take it 'easy' without pushing the envelope and punishing my body for damage. I 'enjoy' my sports.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is still up in the air, but most likely due to over excessive fitness regimes and taking on characteristics of Sports that cause more damage than good.
Australian Sports are 'BACKWARDS' in that they do offer 'injury' upon fitness, rather than the more orthodox of growth and fitness.

Personally, I always played sport for the fun of it - if it got too serious, it wasn't sport. I recommend Tai Chi to anyone and I think Lawn Bowls is great. Go for a jog, but don't 'push it' and punish your body.

Fitness is NOT about a Gold Medal. 

Totally agree with you Batty. Having worked many years in 'surgical wards', I've seen the damage done by 'burning the steak' as we say.
Sport is there to get "FIT", but people tend to take it further and become 'competative' against others and their own bodies. It is no longer about getting fit, its all about getting a Gold Medal, Sponsorships and more money than what its worth.
I did an Art Course with a former Aust High Diving Champ. she was a little pocket dynamo and she enjoyed the High Diving ...but soon as 'others' wanted to take over her soul and TELL HER how to run her life, etc so 'Australia' can win a gold Medal ...she used drugs to scare them away, because she wanted to 'enjoy' her sport more than anything.

Its like driving along a country highway late at night. I always let some speeding bozo get in front and then I find it far easier to just sit back 20-50 metres and follow his reds and let him concentrate on using the HighBeams, let alone take out a Wombat/Roo/pothole/etc upon the road ahead.

Australian Football Codes have become their own worst enemies in that they have had to restructure their rules considerably in an attempt to prevent injuries and other dangerous circumstances. These Codes are backwards in their 'duty of care' you could say.
Reckon Ray Price of Parramatta is no longer walking like Perpetual Motion these days.

Why ruin a lifetime for 10 years of punishment and for what ...selling FujiFilm, NIB Health Insurance, etc.

Exercise is a Sport is an exercise.

Sport you can say is the pretty display icing on the cake.
