What's next for the Liberal Democrats?
Aug 22nd, 2010 at 10:33am

The Liberal Democratic Party went into this election as a micro party no one had really heard about and came out of it one of the most successful minor parties in the countries.

There were positive swings to us in all electorates. Even mine, which I was so relieved to see. And that was from four hours of handing out how-to-vote leaflets. Who knows what could have happened if I actively campaigned for the duration of the election. I guess we'll find out next election, when I plan to actually run in the electorate I live instead of a marginal seat the party put in in hopes it would generate some media attention.

Our house of representative candidate were really only there though to help the Senate candidates, who did very well indeed. In Queensland we managed to stay in for 23 rounds of counting, with only five parties remaining. In Victoria we were knocked out after 21 rounds of counting. In WA we remained in the count until the end when the Greens secured enough votes to gain a senate seat. In NSW though, we performed so well that we might still get a senate seat yet.

From The Age, "New South Wales is the scene of an tangled contest, and the outcome might not be known for weeks - with serial candidate Glenn Druery a chance to take another seat from the Coalition."

The results put us as one of the most successful minor parties up there with the Democratic Labor Party and Australian Sex Party. Next election we'll be up there with the third parties like The Greens and Family First. So the results are very, very good for us. Much better than we ever expected.

From here we see what happens in NSW and then we start our campaign for the next election. Thank you to everyone who support us and myself personally. Big thanks to everyone who actually voted for us. And remember, signing up to the Liberal Democrats is free. The more registered members we have the more state and local election we can contest. So help us take over all three tiers of government.

So what was your primary vote in the senate, and what did you end up with after preferences?

That's impressive. I expect you'll find it harder to get preference deals next time.

Did you get any preference flows from the major parties?

Liberal/National preferences eventually flowed to us.

oh excellent; so you'll have virtually no say in running the country at all.
Gee, that's impressive.
What a waste of a good political name.

it is people like this party tinkering at the edges of politics with lame agendas further splintering and fracturing the electorate and the primary vote that contribute to this situation. There are so many of them now that Australia ends up with the major governing parties unable to get on with the job, and neither can the small parties.
Not like the LibDems in the U.K. is it! Why aren't I surprised?

It is because they didn't get the job done that the minor parties are getting the votes. That's why the greens did so well - Labor decalred climate change the greatest moral challenge of our time but came up with an expensive waste as a solution. The Libs are even worse.

The really small parties like this one don't get a single rep elected so I have no idea how you can blame them for the incompetence of the major parties.

because over the years they have proliferated and only succeeded in fracturing the voter base and resulting in splinter votes across the board. It is a long time coming, and now you have the result. It is like a train racing to a brick wall at 200 ks an hour. This is the result.
You shouldn't vote for parties that have no hope of getting in.
How many of these parties are actually there to get over the line to collect electoral allowances.

Bob, will the Liberal Democrats get an electoral allowance now? I have asked that question twice now, and there has been no response so far.

That doesn't matter because we have preferential voting.

Bob, I would be interested in the preference flows - ie where you got the bulk of the 8% from and where they ended up.

Yes real democracy can be pretty frightening to the unimaginative. Afterall an issue might actually have to be debated and thus made sensible rather than just expedient.

Back to oblivion I'd expect. Not that the punter on the street would have even known they existed to begin with, this is the only place I've ever seen them mentioned.
