THE Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has finished the process of adding 100,000 names to the electoral roll ahead of the election next Saturday.

That follows a High Court decision on a challenge mounted by lobby group GetUp to changes to electoral law that reduced the period in which new voters could enrol.

The AEC said Governor-General Quentin Bryce issued a proclamation yesterday allowing the Electoral Commissioner to update the previously issued lists of voters.

That will be done by printing supplementary voter lists for distribution to polling places. As well letters notifying all affected people of their enrolment status and voting arrangements will be sent from Monday.

In the decision on August 6, the High Court overturned amendments introduced by the Howard government in 2006 tightening the electoral enrolment requirements for new and existing voters

There was a lot of speculation last week about if there would be that many extra people added to the voter lists, a lot of the Liberal support here scoffed there would be that many, well read em and weep.
This is good for Labor and the GREENS as most of these voters are young and likely to vote GREEN or Labor.

Which was completely stupid because the 100,000 figure came from the AEC themselves.

Yes, that's pretty crap considering something to the tune of an estimated 2 mil + wont be able to vote.

Cool
