And nothing later than 1965.

If you were a '56 Rocker, or just a wannabe (I was only 11yo in '56), then this thread is for you.
If you are way younger then come in and listen to some Real Rock...

Let's start at the beginning....

I may have jumped the gun with Bill Haley, as this has been credited as being the First Rock'n'Roll song.

On work computer I can't see youtube or even the subject you are referring to but I will say I have never been much of a fan of Bill Haley.

But I love Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and of course the fabulous Buddy Holly.

I put BH in there as he was my first intro to R'n'R.

I'll have to have a chat with your boss about allowing access to utube... Cheesy

Is it just the utube link that doesn't work?

Does the vid play, or is that blocked as well??

Roy Orbison is a legend!

I really loved his music, until I watched a doco on his tragic life - and I was left with the haunting feeling that he had got away with familicide...

The more I listen to the tone and lyrics of his songs, the less I trust his official life story - and the more I feel that he may have had a gravely-narcissistic streak...

Undecided

PS: Below is an article that briefly mentions the circumstances under which his wife and 2 sons died (from memory, he was with a Cop when his wife died and giving a media interview when his sons died).

I first saw the abovementioned doco when I was much younger and I had totally forgotten about it all until I saw it again a few years ago...

Curiously, I was getting the same gut-feelings the second time around...before I got a sense of dejavu and realised that it was a repeat story about the same artist...

So, I'd be curious to know, if anybody else has seen the same doco - and whether they believe that the director/producers had their own suspicions and/or that they deliberately painted him as a shady and narcissistic character...

Quote:
http://www.spinner.com/2009/01/30/twisted-tales-roy-orbisons-tragic-life-and-aft...

Twisted Tales: Roy Orbison's Tragic Life (and Afterlife) of Sadness and Burnt Homes

Roy Orbison's exquisite voice was the sound of hard luck and shattered hopes. He had the sound first, on such pop-opera masterpieces as 'Crying,' 'In Dreams' and 'Only the Lonely.' The actual heartaches came later.

Like his good friend Johnny Cash, Orbison was rarely seen in anything but his trademark black, and no wonder -- he had more than enough to mourn in his abbreviated life.

His first wife, Claudette, died in a motorcycle accident in 1966. A couple of years later, two of their three sons were killed when the family home in Tennessee burned to the ground while Orbison was performing in England.

Ten years after that, his heavy touring schedule was interrupted when the singer, then barely into his 40s, suffered a serious heart attack that required open heart surgery.

In the mid-1980s, Orbison, whose biggest hits had all come more than two decades earlier, had a well-deserved career renaissance. Shortly after 'In Dreams' was featured in David Lynch's 'Blue Velvet,' HBO taped a star-studded tribute, with the bespectacled crooner backed by a band of lifelong admirers including Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits.

In 1988, he recorded two albums destined for huge success -- a comeback record called 'Mystery Girl' (with songs by Costello along with Bono and the Edge of U2) and a superstar side project, the Traveling Wilburys, with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, George Harrison and ELO's Jeff Lynne.

The Wilburys album came out in October, with the solo record set for release just after the new year. Orbison scarcely had time to enjoy the former, the latter not at all: On Dec. 6, he suffered a fatal heart attack at his mother's house near Nashville. He was 53.

If the songs of this one-of-a-kind Rock and Roll Hall of Famer live on, so does his torment. In April 2007, the longtime lakeside home of Johnny and June Carter Cash, on property originally owned by Orbison, went up in flames; at the time, it was being remodeled by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees.

Earlier this month, yet a third former Orbison property, this one later owned by Tammy Wynette, burned in yet another mysterious blaze. Fire officials haven't determined what caused the most recent inferno, but one thing seems certain: More than 20 years after his death, misfortune still won't leave the King of Pain alone.

I saw a couple of docos on The Big O, but do not recall any 'feelings' other than sorrow for a guy who had suffered more than his fair share of grief.

Not wrong there, jack.
The original Yank version was alright, but nowhere as good as 'The Wild One'.

Sure is!

I was at the old Essendon Airport with my mates to see Rick arrive in Aus.
Still have an autographed photo somewhere.

Didn't make it to his concert though.

Back to my OP for a sec...

I went with my older brother to see the movie (picture, or film, back then) Rock round the Clock at the old Regal Theatre in Essendon Vic.

The local Bodgies and Widgies tore out the first three rows of seats in the front stalls so that they could dance to the music.

From memory the Regal was down Buckley St., possibly on the corner of Lincoln ST.

Certainly not!  I was never an Elvis fan.  I actually liked Joan Baez

This was way before there was the Greens. (Joan looked a lot better when she was young!)

Folk Music was the big thing and the alternative was Bodgies and Widgies who had greasy hair and liked Elvis.
Strangely enough, I never smoked pot, drank or had sex before marriage. I went to Uni and got my Arts Degree like a good daughter should.

I wasn't a big Elvis fan, either.
Did have the hair and leather jacket though when I was 17/18.

And a thumping great '56 Triumph Thunderbird that I inherited from my older brother.

Liked most types of music...Rock, Jazz (modern and Trad), Folk, Surf.
Even some classical.

A one-hit-wonder?  I used to listen to the radio when I was a kid, Top 40's or something in the middle of the night when I should have been sleeping. That would have been late 50's I guess.   I did "see" the Beatles when they came to Melbourne ... joined the crowd to see them waving from their hotel window.  Grin

What other "hits" did Del Shannon have?

Yes, the Southern Cross Hotel.  Tongue  I really wasn't that much into the Beatles but it was the done thing back then to go and "see" them.  I listened to classical music too and went to see shows at Her Majesties and dined in little restaurants in Collins Street, etc. Those were the days. Cool

There was a great restaurant downstairs beside the Regent(?) in Collins St.
(I think it was the Regent Theatre.
Opposite side of the road to the Town Hall.)

Can't recall the name, but it didn't open on Saturdays.

Great food.

Del Shannon - Hats off to Larry

I really really really dislike Jazz and Blues. But I like Soul...my favourite being Otis Redding of course, unfortunately "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" has been done to death by idiotic radio stations and DJ's with single digit IQ's (most of them)

Love classical, but am pretty sure that if Beethoven was alive today he'd be in a Metal band. actually that's a lie, a genius like him would do everything.

Glady's "Midnight Train to Georgia" fantastic!.

And Nat King Cole...pure velvet.

Give me Rock and Roll all the way, classic, hard, metal and punk. I love it.

Cool

Not sure if this was 50,s or early 60's, but the song is a classic and the animation is unbelievably good.

About 1957, mozza.

Recorded in Aus by Dinah Lee (Ex-pat Kiwi), but Jacki Wilson's original is way better.

Something stirred up the ol' brain cells while enjoying sunshine at the Quay this pm.

A young Japanese couple in all their wedding finery reminded me of this rather sad love song which was a hit here in Aus somewhere around 1963.

http://tben.wordpress.com/2007/10/07/lyrics-of-ue-o-muite-aruko-or-i-look-up-whe...

I used this url as it contains the original lyrics and a fair translation.

I can't remember what the hit song was when I WALKED.  He was very controlling. Abusive. I could never understand why, but I left with a young child and hoped for the best.

There was never anybody else for me.  He died, suddenly in 2006. He never remarried either.

Sometimes I miss being young and the arguments and the challenges of minds ......

Some powerful images in this clip and I have to admit that I didn't know that chain gangs were reintroduced in Alabama in 1995.

There is more to MUSIC than what reminds you of when you were 10-15 years old.  I missed the 70's "music" since I was mainly listening to OPERA and SYMPHONIES and attending COCKTAIL PARTIES and BALLET.  What's your excuse? Roll Eyes

Some mongrel Federal Liberal Govt told me I had to go play soldiers in the mid 60s, hence my lack of interest in a lot of post '65 music.

Guess you had to be there....

The 60's was how long ago?  I guess you are talking about Vietnam ... most of the kids posting here have no idea and I presume that their fathers are either too old or not old enough to bother telling them.  It was a War we should not have had.   You should be glad that you survived, many didn't.

Who "performed" for the soldiers during the war?

I do understand, Froggie. but isn't it time to catch up on other music?

Meanwhile, back at the ranch ..........

Yes What....
Probably the most favourite radio show of schoolboys.
We were able to quote the complete show the following day at school.

I managed to find a CD at the ABC shop.

To put the video on here click on the 5th icon  from the left above the reply box.

Looks something like this.  [media][media]

Then insert link as you did, ie between the two internal brackets.

In memory of Doug and Gary and the night we sang this 'under the clocks' at Flinders Street station just after I got my Call-up Notice.

Great times.

Rag Doll....

While I liked Franki Valli's version, I think Del Shannon's is brilliant.

"lol, I really wish I could have been alive during that time.  Cry"------Imperium.

It WAS a fun time, imp.
That's probably why I started this thread.

We were a pretty innocent mob back then, as is shown in a lot of the music.

I've always considered it as "happy music". NO hidden messages.

As one song put it, "Let's think about life".

Must see if I can find it.

They ARE a lot of fun Froggie, but these songs mean a lot more to me than as just sheer entertainment, particularly the Johnny Horton tracks. There is a real, enthusiastic celebration of heritage, race and ancestry inherent in this music, without a hint of the dreary 'culture of critique'-esque self-reflection, emphasis on supposed past transgressions and attempts by sneering intellectuals to deconstruct traditional Western heroes. There's little to anything in the pop culture that I grew up with (1990s, 2000s) that doesn't just make me miserable and pine for the future of my civilization, which is why I find this sort of music so refreshing.

I don't think that I put all that much "depth" into why I like the music from this period, imp.

It just reminds me of the good times and good mates that I had back then.
Sure, there were some rough times, but nothing that we didn't manage to survive.
