Oldfield was amazing. Just a kid, locking himself in his room, while his alcoholic mother raged away downstairs about a life abandoned. Learning all those instruments and then self-producing his masterpiece which blew Richard Branson away who was near broke with a magazine flop. Hearing Oldfield - Virgin Records was formed and from the first shot at trying to succeed in life - both became overnight millionaires. The 'sweet spot' never gets any better than that.

Sadly Oldfield hooked up a Heroine addiction and you could tell in his later albums the scattered lack of concentration in his efforts. But he recovered and continued on (alas, with a creative limp, from then on).
