many Australians feel the same way. I would be very careful of people who think it was no problem to do something like that, especially to their own side.

not citizen here, have no right to vote. but hope you guys choose a smart leader with passions to find a way to the future in next election. personally i think the labour party is bad, they only knows how to "bribe" normal voters by give a little cash "bonus", but no big plan or direction to the country at all.

asian: there is a new thread in the general board about what people in other countries, especially in Asia think about Australia.
If you would like to make any observation there, I am sure it would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your interest.

A little bit more about Rudd. I think most people's impression from outside is that Rudd's political life was pushed to death by mining industry. That tax is the direct cause. I think this tax policy is one of a few good policies his government made in these years. but finally it helped a lot to get rid of himself.

This world is such lacking of resources now, why can not australians get more benefits from their natural resouces? my understanding is the resources are mainly controlled directly or indirectly by foreingers. something interesting is that you guys have iron ores and coal mines, but mining industry here never thought about put them together to make steels, isn't it interesting? they always stay at the bottom of world's industrial food chain.

great point! It isn't the first time that stuff gets exported from Australia without any other value added. Actually, Australia does have a very strong steel making industry, those people are very wealthy really.
It is a declining industry though, just as it is in America and elsewhere. It is because a lot of the steel is now made in Asia and it is a lot less expensive to make it there, because the workers' wages are very low compared to other places, so places with more expensive wages cannot make the steel for those prices.
Australia is also a long way from anywhere else, so transporting heavy steel made here all around the world makes it more expensive as well; and there is only a small population here, so what would we do with all that steel? China needs it, and they can make it cheaply.

not fully agree. raw materials are much more heavier than processed materials. labour cost? japanese, koreans both run their steel factory very well with imported materials, and you guys need only local purchasing and shorter distance tranports. poplulation and market size are only excuses from polititians. i mean it more looks like that some people don't want this country to control too much in the entire value chain.

maybe not just excuses from politicians. Politicians in this country can't tell businesses to make the steel or not. That is up to the business to decide whether it is worth doing, whether there is enough profit to be made for the outlay of money to set up.
Newcastle in New South Wales used to be one of Australia's main steel producing cities, it was the main reason for the city being there really. Now, the steel industry there has almost closed down, or fully closed down, I am not sure, but it is small now compared to what it was. The city now is just the port for loading coal onto the ships that come there to take it to overseas countries.
Why have they closed down the steel making here, do you know?
The politicians didn't tell them to, the companies made their own decisions.
