Israeli police crushes international prostitute ring

TEL AVIV, March 8 (RIA Novosti) - The Israeli police announced on Sunday it had crushed an international criminal network involved in recruiting thousands of women from former Soviet republics for prostitution abroad.

The operation, code-named Octopus Tentacles, was the concluding stage of measures carried out in the past two years by the police from Israel, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Similar arrests were earlier made in former Soviet republics.

According to Israeli investigators, the criminal group members frequently acted with the help of corrupted officials, recruiting women in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Moldavia and Uzbekistan and largely sending them to work in illegal brothels in Israel.

The criminal group members arrested in Israel face at least 20 years of imprisonment.

WASHINGTON, December 12 (RIA Novosti) - A federal judge ruled a Russian entrepreneur accused of running a child prostitution ring in Russia must await trial behind bars in the United States.

Andrei (or Andrew) Mogilyansky, 38, of Richboro, Pennsylvania, whose personal wealth is estimated at $10 million, was granted house arrest on Wednesday, but the ruling was overturned following an appeal by the prosecution over fears that Mogilyansky's assets, language skills and global connections meant he was a flight risk.

"Obviously, he does have family here and ties to the community, but certainly with his wealth he could take his family and travel outside the U.S.," District Judge Mary McLaughlin said during the prosecution appeal.

Mogilyansky, who has both Russian and U.S. citizenship, was charged last week with organizing an online child prostitution ring in the Russian capital that involved bringing over orphaned girls from St. Petersburg from 2002 to 2004 together with four other men, who were tried and convicted in Russia in 2004.

"He took those girls to his apartment in St. Petersburg, where he molested them. He molested them as a way of introducing them to his child prostitution business. After he molested these girls, he sent them to Moscow to work as prostitutes for him," acting U.S. attorney, Laurie Magid, said earlier.

Mogilyansky, a Columbia University graduate, owns a car export business based in suburban Philadelphia and other businesses that provide a salary of $750,000 a year or more.

The businessman's lawyer, George Newman, has denied all the allegations. "We deny all allegations and we are ready to respond to them in court," Newman told reporters.

Even though Mogilyansky is in jail awaiting trial, prosecutors are still continuing their investigation. It has not been ruled out that Mogilyansky also had associates in the U.S.

Mogilyansky has been indicted with four charges. Each charge carries a maximum prison sentence of up to 30 years behind bars and a $1 million fine.

So when are the US businessmen involved in child sex rings going to go down? Or are they mates of this judge so they will be protected?

MOSCOW, July 16 (RIA Novosti) - Police have arrested a man on charges of throwing a home-made explosive device at a group of women believed to be prostitutes on a highway near Moscow during the night, local police told RIA Novosti.

The incident, in which seven people were injured, occurred at around 1:00 a.m. Moscow time on the Gorkovskoye highway, near the town of Balashikha to the east of the capital, in an area with several shops and cafes.

Police said that immediately after the attack, two suspects were identified. The search for the second man is ongoing.

"One of them, a local resident, left clear traces and was tracked down. He has been taken to the police station, where he is being questioned," a spokesman said.

Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda earlier reported that six prostitutes were injured in the attack, along with one client. The paper said that several men, most of whom work at a nearby military factory, had got into a dispute with pimps when negotiating a price for the prostitutes' services.

The women, from various parts of Russia and Ukraine, were standing on the sidewalk when an Opel car pulled up, and an explosive device packed with metal shards was thrown out of the window, detonating in their midst, the paper said.

Two women suffered only minor injuries, while four along with one client received severe arm and leg wounds, and are being treated in hospital.

According to the tabloid, the Gorkovskoye highway is a notorious sex destination, with clusters of prostitutes "every 500 meters".

Over 76 people nabbed in Spain in Russian prostitute r

MADRID, April 8 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 76 people have been arrested in southeast Spain as part of a year-long police operation to break up a criminal network involved in a Russian prostitution ring, police said on Tuesday.

The operation codenamed Zapra, which was run in the provinces of Almeria, Granada, Lerida and Gerona, led to around 400 Russian women being detained as illegal migrants in a year.

Over 70 police officers were involved in the final phase of the operation when 24 people were detained in March-April 2008 on suspicion of exploiting foreign females.

The police said in a statement it had been established that the prostitute ring was made up mainly of Russian-Spanish couples, where the Spanish men were largely involved in running the brothels and clubs, while the women, predominately of Russian descent, were responsible for recruiting the prostitutes.

Police said over 2 million euros had been transferred to Russia since 2006. The payments were transferred in sums no higher than 3,000 euros in a complicated system to avoid detection for money laundering activities.
