Swearing to God
Mar 7th, 2009 at 8:35pm

Is it true Christians are not supposed to do/say things like "I swear to God." or use a Bible in court when saying that they will not give false testimony?

Something about let your yes be yes and your no be no?

Quote:
Mt ch5 v33-37
Again, you have heard how it was said to our ancestors, You must not break your oath, but must fulfil your oaths to the Lord. But I say this to you, do not swear at all, either by heaven, since that is God's throne; or by earth since that is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, since that is the city of the great King. Do not swear by your own head either, since you cannot turn a single hair white or black. All you need is "Yes" if you mean yes, "No" if you mean no; anything more than this comes from the Evil One.

Oh, I've aware of the quote.

But to extroplate that to say xians should not swear on the bible in a court is ridiculous.

I could probably find more isolated quotes that are as foolish.
Got to read your own bible yourself, it gives one the overall picture.
You know what weighting to give topics.

The thing is though, Christians are supposed to pursue truth anyway, isn't that the Christian way, oppose corruption and what have you?

So if someone was a Christian only in name, or wanted to give an air of integrity when they were lying, they would have no problem making an oath on the Bible.

Also, if someone asks you to make an oath on the Bible, what do they think they are doing? Who do they think they are? Are they trying to instil fear of God in to others, misusing and abusing fear of the unknown/afterlife?

In regards to tallowood's post:

I had this discussion with a Muslim guy a while back, I asked him to swear on the Qu'ran for some reason, and he was like no, that is blasphemy (not that word though) or something.

That isn't the same as them not doing it if they were telling the truth.

Where is all this bullshit about what Christians are and aren't suppose to do?

Wasn't the rules made in the ten commandments and the rest is just filler of different prophets opinions and blogs?
