how to increase the power of your senate vote

When voting in the federal senate, it is possible to increase the power of your vote by voting below the line and ranking the lists in reverse order. This is especially true if you vote for the major parties.

For example, suppose the first Liberal senator is elected with twice as many votes as is necessary to gain a seat. The votes are then not tossed aside. Instead, they go on to the second preference, but have their value reduced by one half (depending on the ratio of votes to the number needed for a seat). If you rank the Labor senators in reverse order, your vote will not be partially used up in electing the first senator. Most people vote above the line, so the election of the first senator is pretty much guaranteed. Voting for a minor party first will have a similar effect, because the selection of the first senators is done before minor candidates are eliminated and their preferences redistributed.
