Australia 10th in World Democracy Ranking.

Interesting that Australia’s Press Freedom ranking is 21/150 while New Zealand’s is 6/150.

New Zealand
     Democracy Rank - 4
     Press Freedom Rank - 6
     Corruption Rank - 1

Australia
     Democracy Rank - 10
     Press Freedom Rank - 21
     Corruption Rank - 10

(A lower figure - from a possible 150 is better).

While 21/150 is still relatively very good, how is it that the Australian media is deemed to be 15 points worse than New Zealand?

Because the media is concentrated between about four different people?

Bolivia is ranked 57th? Bolivia had an election several years ago that we could only dream of here. In fact it is probably the only example so far in the 21st century of a real election.

I wouldn't put too much faith in this world audit 'democracy ranking'.

Maybe there is less hysteria about terrorist infiltrators or Muslim immigration in NZ and the need for extraordinary legislation to curb press freedoms.

What was special about Bolivia's election?

I agree that we have some press freedom and FOI issues, but the survey seems to have left out some more fundamental issues. The electoral system of the US, UK and many other western countries puts 'third parties' at a strong and persistent disadvantage. This is a barrier to true democracy as it severely limits competition.
