According to the AEC website, voter turnout plummeted to 80% for the election. Last election it was about 95% and as far as I know it has been fairly steady over the years. This is a huge drop so either the AEC has done something silly with their stats or something strange is going on. Perhaps voters were having trouble distuinguishing Labor and the coalition, or were confused by the departure of both parties from their traditional core philosophies. http://vtr.aec.gov.au/HouseTurnoutByState-13745.htm Turnout By State | State | Enrolment | Turnout | % | last election % | Swing % | New South Wales | 4,495,336 | 3,565,693 | 79.32 | 95.8 | -16.48 | Victoria | 3,442,096 | 2,685,586 | 78.02 | 94.87 | -16.85 | Queensland | 2,612,300 | 2,095,528 | 80.22 | 94.67 | -14.45 | Western Australia | 1,312,942 | 1,038,144 | 79.07 | 92.79 | -13.72 | South Australia | 1,075,968 | 893,489 | 83.04 | 94.79 | -11.75 | Tasmania | 349,788 | 306,433 | 87.61 | 95.65 | -8.04 | Australian Capital Territory | 238,742 | 183,097 | 76.69 | 96.45 | -19.76 | Northern Territory | 117,901 | 83,233 | 70.60 | 84.25 | -13.65 | TOTAL | 13,645,073_ | 10,851,203_ | 79.52_ | 94.89 | -15.37 |
