Ausholes comments on jails
Apr 20th, 2007 at 9:47am

Aushole said, in another thread :

"Not very effective, when recidivism is around 70%!

Keeping people off the streets, more like it. Current estimates class 2/3 of the prison population as mentally unstable. Around 80% are drug users.

Starting drug rehab and psychiatric assessment might be a good idea.

Can anyone tell me why its called the Department of Corrections? "

I agree entirely Aushole.
The recidivism (nice word) is only the ones that are caught. jail is the university for criminals. There they learn how to not get caught.

The punitive punishnment system could perhaps serve society better if it were more compassionate, more results based.
I am NOT talking about letting peole off. I am talking about making them more contributing members of scoiety.

Cant be a very good university, if the return rate is so high! Wink

The problem with prisons is that they do not act as a deterrent. Most criminals think they will never get caught. And the rest dont care if they are caught.

Prisons have become a convenient place to hide society's misfits.

they do many more crimes than they get caught for. same as speeding.
that many get recaught means it is not much of a deterrant.

yes, prob a good hidey hole for those that don't fit societys norms too.

Here's a question, would criminals of today still be criminals if we lived in a comunist society?

Is it the adventure of the crime? Is it the need for financial gain ( capitalism ) or the need to feed a habit (Drugs, brought about by capitalism which nurtures the need to succeed)?

I would imagine criminals would exist in any society pretty well. Every one I have heard of.

Probably a confluence of pressures push most to criminal actions. Some people just love the thrill.

prob not better paid than any "normal" job. prob worse paid ?? prospects are limited ?

I don't think druggies should go to jail not for a long time at least.
As for the rest of criminals I think mental issues is what triggers
the crimes. Getting paid and getting a thrill could also be part of it.

Hi Dee,
How are you ?  Most druggies (legal or illegal) are not criminals. A jail term is unwarranted.

Criminal (real criminals) are cunning, they are in it for   1/ money,   2/  thrills.

mentally, they have very much got their heads screwed on.

Enviro - yes, crime is often pushed by poverty and ignorance.
In full employment times , there is not as much poverty

That's great news SprintCyclist. This means John howards policies have also reduced crime saving the taxpayer probably millions onece again and giving us all more security without interfering with our civil liberties.

There are still drug addicts & criminals in Communist Russia & China.

We are now nurturing our younger generations to not  accede to the need to succeed ....

they just expect it on a platter for being there.

That's a stupid aspiration in life.

No - our jails are full beyond capacity.

That's being rectified by the Judiciaries taking soft approaches to sentencing & wrist slapping to keep what should be a long line of future inmates on our streets.  Angry

Ok

Simple cures for the lot.

Thieves should have everything they own taken from them and placed into a fund for victims of crime'
By everything I mean everything, leave them with nothing but the clothing on their back.
If the family has benefitted from the crime, they lose the lot as well.

Druggies, put them in lockup to dry out, once they are clean, let them out.
Each time do the same thing, no medical attention, no come down drugs, no methadone, just dry out in the cell.

Murderers, terrorists, pedophiles, simply put them down and mulch the remains, feed it to the sharks.

Political criminals, corrupt police and grubberment officials, they, like thieves lose the lot, leave them with nothing.

Road crime, lose their cars for 1 year first offence, 2 years second offence and for good after three if committed within 5 years.

Come down hard and the honest people will reap the benefits.

But this will never happen
Thieves make up 70% of the courts finances, they would never give up the revenue.
Druggies are often high profile and help support the corrupt cops and judges.
Murderers, terrorists and pedophiles make up a good percentage of the woke and corrupt officials, they wont do their own.
Same with political criminals, corrupt police, and grubberment officials, they will protect their own.
Road crime, the grubberment tried something like this years ago.
But too many people lost their licences because of the draconian road rules we have, the resulting burden on centalink for people without jobs gave the grubberment pause to increase the fines and reduce the penalties. best of both worlds , more money and people could continue to work while paying fines for petty, stupid offences.

Remember, the grubberment is simply a corrupt money laundering machine.
They will never do anything to cut that revenue stream

I think a Communist Regime style of processing our Australian Gaols wouldn't go astray here. I know Outback Prisons become a 'Safe House' where they are free to come and go, away from the Ice, drugs, alcohol and petrol sniffing. Many Aboriginal Men use Prisons as a 'sacred space' away from the poisons and toxins that have appeared here - in Sahul, the most virulent Region of the World. Poisons old or new - both Poisons.
Australia has the highest ratio of drug/alcohol/substance abuse, per population than any other nation. At the moment, its a losing battle. We should be getting on top of it NOW. While the Medics are out of the Hospitals and working the streets with Testing Clinics and Check Points. Getting 'Professionals' out on the streets lowers crime. I know from experience of living in Melbourne when they had Conductors and when they didn't. I saw the rise in 'disturbances' on Trams. I saw the rise in crime  when Crown Casino opened up. Conductors were the best Representatives of Tourism and Public Awareness in case of crime potential - keeping Melbourne Public safer.

Our City Gaols still seem the usual, where we keep the Monsters in and away from harming Animals and Humans.
But it seems that the Process of a Gaol's purpose of voiding as much 'stimulation' as possible to the inmate, is what breaks down an evil nature. Australian Gaols are now anything but. Definitely no 'lock down' upon their evil nature. Instead we offer them much stimulations with even 'College' degrees. So besides all the 'Contraband' we know goes into those Gaols both via Drones from external and from Guards themselves (proven). Prisoners of today have a new take on society.

Now maybe they're 'indoctrinating' Christianity into them, while they attain all these new skills to cope with the outside world?
Maybe the New Agers are covertly teaching their Gaean ways to the Prisoners under the cover of Education and Skills?

I know the Communists would be 'teaching' their Prisoners 'routinely' the doctrines of Communism. Like Vogon Poetry, the Prisoners would hate to come back. Wink
