A new VicHealth campaign to stop violence against women will tackle community attitudes and beliefs that help perpetuate abusive behaviour.

The Violence Against Women Respect and Responsibility campaign, which includes 29 projects across Victoria to trial preventive measures, aims to prevent criminal acts of violence.

"Doing nothing to prevent violence against women is just not an option. It is a crime and it's preventable," VicHealth chief executive Todd Harper said.

"Domestic violence alone is the single biggest health impact on women between the ages of 15-44, with tremendous mental health problems often resulting from the abuse."
