Dobbing can take many forms.

Trust is a big factor in some forms, for example if you tell someone something in confidence like, "I don't like that person because ..." and they go and tell that person well this becomes a breach of trust.

In other forms Freediver is right as it is part of the culture that has sprung up from the convict days and through our prison system of today. The bond between prisoners, or convicts, is only held together by trust.

Then you have the scenario of where you know someone who murdered someone and to keep quiet about it would not only make you an accesory which means you could face a punishment of loss of freedom but also it may riddle you with guilt for the rest of your life. The only real thing that stops you from dobbing on someone is fear of reprisal.

I think we are conditioned into not "dobbing" from the day we start school.  Children dread being called the "D" word when they're old enough to understand what it means.

I can still hear those words "What a dobber" - not to me personally of course.

I think the tall poppy syndrome is seriously holding back the academic achievement of our children, and probably the productivity of many of our employees. The Americans are very different in this regard and value success, however this is probably tied to being a very consumerist society (he who dies with the most toys wins) which isn't much better. I think we should put more value in achievement, but not just getting rich. Hey, I think the Tall Poppy Syndrome is a healthy part of Australian culture. It keeps people grounded. There is no barrier against success as long as you don't see yourself as above everyone else - your success should be their success. Freediver's example of Dick Smith is a good one. He is very successful, and also a fairly popular public figure. It proves he's found the right balance. Those who cop the Tall Poppy knife deserve it for not adequately sharing their accomplishments with the broader community. The excesses of the United States are exactly what you get without a well functioning Tall Poppy Syndrome.

It's a carry-over from the convict colony beginning of the Civilisation period of Australia... when the cards were so stacked in favour of the 'cops' etc, it just wasn't done to 'dob' someone, since the punishment for even minor things could be draconian.

People outside the power loop just operated by a different standard - one of self-protection and protection of their 'own' group.

It's only in recent years that courts here have begun to demand proof and not just assertions from cops etc, for conviction.

I believe that dobbing is slowly fading out in Australia.

When I was young Dobbing would get you a significant beating, now most people don't even blink twice.

Worse was being a scab which is also now fairly well accepted.

I don't see it relating to tall poppy syndrome in any way and in fact it would be more often applied to short poppies and likely more often used by tall poppies maybe the occasional chubby Orchid.
