Dobbing..why is it so detested amongst Aussies?
Mar 8th, 2007 at 12:42pm

In Australia it is taught early on on our school life that dobbing or telling tales is somehow spineless and sneaky..

Dobbers are sure not liked or respected by the average Aussie and Ive even heard myself say  '..please dont dob'...

What is the   reason for  the culture of 'dont dob on your mates '..even if we feel sometimes it may be the right thing to do.?

could it just be nobody likes a snitch, that if we have a problem with someone we show that person the dececy of bringing it to them instead of going behind theyre backs...demonstrates lack of respect I believe.

Maybe it's something to do with convict ancestors?

I'm not sure if it's any stronger in Australia than other countries.

Dobbing can take many forms.

Trust is a big factor in some forms, for example if you tell someone something in confidence like, "I don't like that person because ..." and they go and tell that person well this becomes a breach of trust.

In other forms Freediver is right as it is part of the culture that has sprung up from the convict days and through our prison system of today. The bond between prisoners, or convicts, is only held together by trust.

Then you have the scenario of where you know someone who murdered someone and to keep quiet about it would not only make you an accesory which means you could face a punishment of loss of freedom but also it may riddle you with guilt for the rest of your life. The only real thing that stops you from dobbing on someone is fear of reprisal.

Have you been drinking? Huh

I don't know how you got the idea that I said dobbing is healthy? Grin I answered with psychological facts not beliefs. Having grown up with convict ancestors, on one side of the family, the code of trust and loyalty is of the upmost importance to me. My lips are generally sealed  Lips Sealed and I'm not a gossiper. I leave that to the women.

It seems to me that as one gets older dobbing is more of a problem.People that may have missed out on promotion or just want to advance their careers tend to rat people out more easily in their later years for some reason. But now its called"backstabbing"Anyway i hate dobbers, backstabbers, liars, bounders and thieves Angry

I think there is a difference between gossiping/backstabbing and dobbing. The petty stuff just gets people wound up but doesn't achieve anything. It is not necessary to tell someone that another person doesn't like them.

A bounder is an old expression for someone that makes a promise or gives assureances freely and then does the bolt when you expect them to come thru.Marginally better than a liar

I wonder what causes a bounder to bolt? Would it be a breach of trust as the reason for them not honouring their promise? Obviously their would be shades of bounding.

I think we are conditioned into not "dobbing" from the day we start school.  Children dread being called the "D" word when they're old enough to understand what it means.

I can still hear those words "What a dobber" - not to me personally of course.   Embarrassed

I think dobbing, tall poppy syndrome, Aussie battler all go hand in hand. They probably have some grounding in our convict past, as FD mentioned.

The Australian stereotype is to keep a low profile and get on with things in your own way. A dobber is viewed as an upstart, and someone wanting to make a name for themselves.

its just the us and them class thing that was rife in the early days of settlement. If your mate knocked off a couple of sheep from the landowner you worked for you wouldnt tell the boss because your mate will probably be over after dark with some of the bounty. To dob would not only get your mate in the poo but cut yourself out of a free feed to boot.I hate dobbers

I think the tall poppy syndrome is seriously holding back the academic achievement of our children, and probably the productivity of many of our employees. The Americans are very different in this regard and value success, however this is probably tied to being a very consumerist society (he who dies with the most toys wins) which isn't much better. I think that in British schools it is even worse and the bright kids are even more ostracised.

I think we should put more value in achievement, but not just getting rich. We certainly value sporting achievement, and those two scientists got a lot of publicity recently over their (nobel?) prize, which is a good sign. I think that Dick Smith seems to have understood the feeling in the community well. His success is mostly in business, but he tries to be seen to be contributing to society and enjoying life.

Freediver,
you are so right about the tall poppy syndrome..

It is a dead weight..we should celebrate our acheivers, instead we bag them amd pull them down, its not a very nice side to  our characters.

DT..I have no idea what Im supposed to be agreeing to in answer to your question..

Hey, I think the Tall Poppy Syndrome is a healthy part of Australian culture. It keeps people grounded. There is no barrier against success as long as you don't see yourself as above everyone else - your success should be their success. Freediver's example of Dick Smith is a good one. He is very successful, and also a fairly popular public figure. It proves he's found the right balance. Those who cop the Tall Poppy knife deserve it for not adequately sharing their accomplishments with the broader community. The excesses of the United States are exactly what you get without a well functioning Tall Poppy Syndrome.

It's a carry-over from the convict colony beginning of the Civilisation period of Australia... when the cards were so stacked in favour of the 'cops' etc, it just wasn't done to 'dob' someone, since the punishment for even minor things could be draconian.

People outside the power loop just operated by a different standard - one of self-protection and protection of their 'own' group.

It's only in recent years that courts here have begun to demand proof and not just assertions from cops etc, for conviction.

That is why Young Brittany's thing must NOT be used to change the requirement for substantial proof for conviction, regardless of the efforts of the 'feminist' Neo-Fascist groups striving for that.

In the workplace "dobbers" are usually backstabbing suckholes that run to the boss over the most trivial of matters.

Any boss worth their salt would see these clowns on their way & be sickened by their arse licking ....

yet some bosses revel in the attention & are the same sort of characters.

It's how they became bosses. Grin

Funnily enough .... I've never been a workplace dobber.

I've never liked workplace empire builders either.

I believe that dobbing is slowly fading out in Australia.

When I was young Dobbing would get you a significant beating, now most people don't even blink twice.

Worse was being a scab which is also now fairly well accepted.

I don't see it relating to tall poppy syndrome in any way and in fact it would be more often applied to short poppies and likely more often used by tall poppies maybe the occasional chubby Orchid.

It depends on the type of dobbing.
If it’s someone that’s a danger to society (drink/driver) then there needs to justified dobbing.
Some things I tolerate, but not all.
If we don’t dob for the right reasons then we are deemed as frightened or pushovers.
The CCP encouraged dobbing during pandemic lockdowns. Even offered money to do so.
There were the Aussie hardcore non dobbers of past but these new gens are snowflakes!
The goalposts of dobbing rules have shifted.

When Jerry Springer show was on tv some decades back… I was mortified by the way they aired their dirty laundry! Something not done in Oz…. But now Oz have become more Americanised than ever and imitated that. Old Aussie culture seems to be fading fast.

Actually you're right! Context is everything hey.

If I was in Germany during WW2 I certainly would not be dobbing anyone hiding targeted people destined for concentration camps and ovens. Why? Well Duh! I'd be dobbing myself and my whole family!!!

The CCP encouraged dobbing during pandemic lockdowns. Even offered money to do so.

This is a feature of all totalitarian regimes.

Nazi Germany, Franco's Spain, Fascist Italy, Pinochet's Chile, Castro's Cuba, the Soviet Union, the CCP,  etc, etc, etc...

They all encourage and reward dobbing, not only for non-relatives but family members too.

There was a joke after East Germany was reunited with West Germany - That the eastern spy-equipment manufacturers had to convert their factories for civilian use. Now they make hearing aids that can hear people 3 blocks away and glasses that can see around corners.

Ask people (if you can find any left) who lived through Nazi Germany or its occupied countries about dobbing.

An infamous Soviet case of dobbing - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavlik_Morozov

'His politicized and mythologized story was used to encourage Soviet Bloc children to also inform on their parents'.

I reckon women make the best Dobbers.
They usually do it for all the right reasons.

They say if there was female prison guards at Alcatraz.
They would have spotted that tunnel as soon as it started.
Because they can pick a fault in anything. Cheesy
