Dobbing..why is it so detested amongst Aussies?
Mar 8th, 2007 at 12:42pm

In Australia it is taught early on on our school life that dobbing or telling tales is somehow spineless and sneaky..

Dobbers are sure not liked or respected by the average Aussie and Ive even heard myself say  '..please dont dob'...

What is the   reason for  the culture of 'dont dob on your mates '..even if we feel sometimes it may be the right thing to do.?

could it just be nobody likes a snitch, that if we have a problem with someone we show that person the dececy of bringing it to them instead of going behind theyre backs...demonstrates lack of respect I believe.

Maybe it's something to do with convict ancestors?

I'm not sure if it's any stronger in Australia than other countries.

Dobbing can take many forms.

Trust is a big factor in some forms, for example if you tell someone something in confidence like, "I don't like that person because ..." and they go and tell that person well this becomes a breach of trust.

In other forms Freediver is right as it is part of the culture that has sprung up from the convict days and through our prison system of today. The bond between prisoners, or convicts, is only held together by trust.

Then you have the scenario of where you know someone who murdered someone and to keep quiet about it would not only make you an accesory which means you could face a punishment of loss of freedom but also it may riddle you with guilt for the rest of your life. The only real thing that stops you from dobbing on someone is fear of reprisal.

Have you been drinking? Huh

I don't know how you got the idea that I said dobbing is healthy? Grin I answered with psychological facts not beliefs. Having grown up with convict ancestors, on one side of the family, the code of trust and loyalty is of the upmost importance to me. My lips are generally sealed  Lips Sealed and I'm not a gossiper. I leave that to the women.
Shocked

Can you stop yelling you hurting my ear drums Grin

It seems to me that as one gets older dobbing is more of a problem.People that may have missed out on promotion or just want to advance their careers tend to rat people out more easily in their later years for some reason. But now its called"backstabbing"Anyway i hate dobbers, backstabbers, liars, bounders and thieves Angry

I think there is a difference between gossiping/backstabbing and dobbing. The petty stuff just gets people wound up but doesn't achieve anything. It is not necessary to tell someone that another person doesn't like them.

never heard of a bounder enviro?
A bounder is an old expression for someone that makes a promise or gives assureances freely and then does the bolt when you expect them to come thru.Marginally better than a liar

I wonder what causes a bounder to bolt? Would it be a breach of trust as the reason for them not honouring their promise? Obviously their would be shades of bounding.

I think we are conditioned into not "dobbing" from the day we start school.  Children dread being called the "D" word when they're old enough to understand what it means.

I can still hear those words "What a dobber" - not to me personally of course.   Embarrassed

I think dobbing, tall poppy syndrome, Aussie battler all go hand in hand. They probably have some grounding in our convict past, as FD mentioned.

The Australian stereotype is to keep a low profile and get on with things in your own way. A dobber is viewed as an upstart, and someone wanting to make a name for themselves.

its just the us and them class thing that was rife in the early days of settlement. If your mate knocked off a couple of sheep from the landowner you worked for you wouldnt tell the boss because your mate will probably be over after dark with some of the bounty. To dob would not only get your mate in the poo but cut yourself out of a free feed to boot.I hate dobbers
