Should prostitution be legalised?
Mar 1st, 2007 at 1:40pm

A report from the SMH points to significantly better conditions for women working in legal borthels compared to private or steet prostitutes. Another advantage is that the government can raise revenue by taxing it, rather than creating a black market (the same as the argument against abolition of alcohol).

http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Brothelbased-pros-enjoy-their-jobs/2007/03/01/1172338771078.html

Legal prostitutes are just as happy as women with regular day jobs, according to a survey reporting high job satisfaction in parts of the sex industry.

One in four of the women surveyed had a Bachelor degree or higher, which is contrary to the popular stereotype that sex workers came from socially disadvantaged backgrounds.

More than 60 per cent were employed before joining the industry.

Legal workers were mentally on par with other women but street workers were far less psychologically stable.

Ms Seib said the reasons for this were complex but probably stemmed from higher rates of child abuse, illicit drug use and violence on the job.

About half said they had been raped or bashed by a client in the past year compared with 12 per cent of private workers and just three per cent of brothel workers.

This proved that legalisation of the industry had been effective for those working within legal boundaries but street workers were still at risk, Ms Seib said.

I think if women make it theyre choice to work as a prostitute then it should be legalised.

They know what they want and how to run theyre own lives so whats the big deal? Prostition has been around since the year dot..

There will always be explotations of course of young and vulnrebale girls but this happens in all areas of working life in most industries.

If prostitution was outlawed completely, rape would skyrocket.
Prostitution is dangerous on the street, whores are unchecked for VD's and aids, street prostitution must be illegal.
In a brothel, they can be screened and tested regularly.
So i voted for brothels only.

I think it's necessary to keep prostitution legal to a certain extent (In brothels)... for the real desperate fellows of our society. And like Ausnat said, if it were outlawed, rapes would skyrocket.

I thought rape was all about power, not sex. Masturbation might go up (slightly), but not rape.

Gasp! We can't let the masturbation levels go up. That'd be chaos.  Grin

Police welcome legal brothel le

http://www.smh.com.au/news/breaking-news/police-welcome-legal-brothel-legislation/2007/08/12/1186857328925.html

Police have welcomed proposals to decriminalise and regulate West Australian brothels, in a move due to be debated in the state parliament in the next month.

Prostitution is not prohibited in Western Australia but it is illegal to manage a brothel and live off the earnings of prostitution.

The laws are archaic and need to be changed, Mr McGinty said.

"The new laws which we will be introducing to parliament in the next month will see brothels regularised, to the extent that we accept the reality that they are there and what we want to do is give local government the power to regulate where they are located and how they operate.

"We want to give the police the power to properly control activities that might be crime-related but most importantly we don't want the absurd situation of the police being required to turn a blind eye to any illegal activity.

A Police Royal Commission in WA recommended the laws be changed to avoid the possibility of police corruption in terms of turning a blind eye to something illegal but unenforceable, Mr McGinty said.

Should we really make prostitution a career choice option for young girls? I know a few youngsters in a town where prostitution is legal and they have it as the height of their career ambitions. Seems wrogn for me for fifteen year olds to chat about the massive amounts fo moeny they can make selling their bodies and how dumb any other career choice is.

An Italian town's mayor hopes to shame men into not using prostitutes by photographing cars that pick them up and publishing the details in local newspapers.

I fail to see the "victim" in prostitution.
The industry should be legalised and regulated as in many other countries.
People that I know that use them are very happy with them.
A commonish phrase is they re more psychologists than sex workers.

What are they trying to do by naming and shaming ?
It is just the moral ones wanting control.

Perhaps so.  Who is the victim ?

Prostitutes emotionally help some men.
