Rock Enrol

Rock Enrol is a joint venture between jjj and the AEC to encourage young people to enrol to vote. You can enrol from 17 years old, and vote from 18.

The deadline for getting on the electoral roll at the next federal election has been reduced from 7 days after the issuing of the writs (official commencement of the election), to 8pm on the day the writs are issued. Those already on the roll needing to change their address details will have three days.

Win free tickets to the big day out by enrolling to vote.

...

87% of students indicated an intention to vote in federal elections after turning 18.

...

Overall we get roughly 95% turnout for our elections. Apparently the AEC doesn't really bother enforcing compulsory voting.

There seems to a growing awareness from our youth on our government policies.  A lot of this awareness comes from teachers in state high schools who have open and frank discussions with the children.

At 18 - politics was the last thing I cared about and voting was like a game of pin the tail on the donkey.  I didn't care who I voted for.  It was the same with my peers.

Now my daughter at 18, along with her friends are very aware of the major parties, the Greens and independants and the social, environmental and economic issues each of these parties promote.

I think the above figures are excellent and would probably be on par with a similar poll taken for adults.

Prime Minister John Howard's latest YouTube video might be a aimed at generation Y, but if young people want to have a say at this year's federal election year they must enrol to vote.

In an initiative designed to get more young people on the electoral roll, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has teamed up with youth broadcaster Triple-J and some of Australia's top performing artists.

Kicking off on Saturday in Humpty Doo, in the Northern Territory, artists including Missy Higgins, Something for Kate and Blue King Brown, will present a series of "Rock Enrol" concerts designed to spread the word.

Electoral staff will attend the four "Rock Enrol" concerts to be held at Karratha WA, Burnie TAS and Innisfail, QLD, to provide enrolment forms and check enrolment details.
