Title: FD, have you ever admitted when you've been wrong?
Post by Auggie on Nov 30th, 2020 at 5:55pm
[This was commenced in General and moved here by Setanta on the night of the 4th December, 2020.  Mod.]

G'day FD,

Have you ever admitted when you've been wrong on this Forum?

If so, please provide examples of when you've admitted you've been wrong, and what points you were wrong about.

I once conceded that it is theoretically possible for me to be wrong. Gandalf took this as an admission that I was lying about something. Forget what. He went on about it for quite some time though.

Somebody has to be right all the time.
Might as well be the boss.

I on the other hand, seek to be wrong and apologise often.
It's when I'm right, that I seem to annoy everyone.  :D

Um, OK then.

A "lefty" who starts thread after thread decrying the Union movement. A "Lefty" who decries Superannuation. One whose posts are very much "pro business" and "pro free market".

No, I think it's more you having an issue with "the left", and in typically binary fashion conflates someone who always believes they are "right", with the hated "left".

You could say that FD is a "right", who always thinks he's "right"?

Question:

Can two "rights" make a "wrong"?

Well - we surpers won't take that!!

Word for today - surper (proper n).

Either you or me or some other who wishes to surp the authority of the Big Man On The Block; (alt) someone who can't eat soup without sound....

You Surper - often used as a term of derision and denouncement.  e.g. you bloody surper!!!
Me Surper (not to be confused with Middle East surpers) - when 'I' wish to take over the reins of discussion and run it my way (we just want to do things our way, eh?).
We Surpers - a gaggle of surpers.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody sees if flatten a car, could it be said this was trees on?  Do a Google usurp on that...

The context:

Taking stereotyping and the 'othering' process to a whole new level, FD made the bold claim that "all muslims support genocide"

FD came up with the impeccable logic that the claim is simultaneously both "true" and "theoretically wrong".

His rationale seemed to have been "its true while ever you can't disprove it"

FD logic at its finest.

Only because the idiocy of identity politics deems it so.

The need for action on climate change is a simple matter of scientific fact. Its about our very survival as a species. Grandstanding against it just to 'stick it to the lefties/greenies' is the height of stupidity.

Credit to FD as one of the few remaining free market 'true believers' who actually recognises the need to act on climate change.

Sounds more like feminism to me - although it's more usual to see 'wrong' but 'theoretically true'...... you know ... like taking a very wide sweep at saying 'women are forced into heterosexual relationships' (yardle) but that somehow doesn't imply that their natural state is in 'other than heterosexual relationships'.... well double plus yardle....

... or like saying that while women are paid the same hourly rate as men for the same job etc - and then some given their extra perks - women still are paid less than men...... yardle yardle double triple plus yardle...

Easy meat on a quiet Tuesday....

there really isnt much point in admitting error on the internet.

in face to face communications , the nuance is possible but online , people dont get any ackowledgment for admitting error and especially not for apologising.

in fact, the haters will just use an admission of error as an excuse to "pile on".

its why the internet is a force of polarisation.

what would help would be if , the more people posted, the more they were sent commentary that disagreed with them

but facebook twtter google and youtube do the exact opposite, they want you in an echo chamber where everyone agrees with you because that feels nice and who doesnt want to feel nice.

its why , when trump won the 2016 election, many of the intellectuals on twitter were dumbfounded.
they would say things like "i have 10,000 followers and not one of them voted for trump" ;D ;D

and if 10,000 people agree with you , then you are probably unlikely to admit you were "wrong'.
so your brain makes up some story about russiand collusion to keep it from frying.

the same thing is happening to trump supporters this time round.
they only know and interact with 10,000 other trump supporters online.
so their brain has to make up a story about election rigging.

at least freedivers forum does not divide everyone off into little cults.

imagine gweg and smith and the marsupial and karnal just talking to each other for weeks on end.  they are deranged already but such a scenario would make them much worse. we of the noble right , have a duty to try to educate them out of their "ideological possession"

Which left wing principles are those positions founded in?

Take unions for example. They increase inequality, by serving those who are already better off at the expense of everyone else. They constantly try to deny unemployed people the right to work, and if not constantly kept in check would use outright thuggery and intimidation to do so.

On other issues I like to comment on, Muslims are basically Nazis who won (which for some reason makes them entitled to unthinking support from some lefties), and I hope I don't have to explain how carbon taxes are a left wing position, but again some lefties don't like it because it is founded in economic rationalism and they would prefer the government to micromanage this complex transition we are faced with.

Of course, some may want to define left wing as any position founded in ignorance and self delusion, but I don't think that is fair.

FD you are basically claiming the left as your own, while simultaneously opposing most, if not all, positions that are near-universally held by actual leftists.

You then proceed to promote some the most sanctified of conservative/right wing principles like economic rationalism and anti government micromanagement, somehow thinking these are naturally left wing principles.

Or in other words, you are redifining the left beyond all meaning.

By the way, this bullshit "I'm the real pro-working class because I oppose big meany unions etc" rhetoric is just the same BS spouted by conservative/right wing politicians and commentators. The only difference is they don't pretend they are leftys.

I think someone (not you, BTW) is living in "alternate facts land", if they style themselves as "Leftist", and then attack Unions for "promoting inequality."

From a distance it seems as though someone has taken an amalgam of positions they hold, and said "That amalgam is what represents leftist ideals/principles".

Not true, unfortunately.

It would be like me saying "I believe in a proper social safety net, and universal health care, affordable to all!", and then going on to say "And my beliefs are founded in Right Wing maxims..."

I think the reaction would be - rightly - one of  :o

Apart from his support for a carbon tax and action on climate in general, FD's repertoire of political posturings are taken pretty much entirely from the right. Both economic and social. And even with the carbon tax/climate action he argues from an economic conservative perspective.

Every single one of those positions you talk about are in fact right wing/conservative articles of faith.

Like I said, you redefine the left beyond all meaning.

Does that actually mean you're calling him a liar?  ;D

No. I don't give FD that much credit for understanding his own confused ramblings.

FD seems to me quite sincere - sincerely confused.

In Australian Politics and Military
The positions of PM & G-G will become the 'weakest' links. Both held in place by two other nations: UK & USA 'currently'.  ::)
Both industries will become weak at the top, strong at the bottom (cops & troops).

Writing (Religion/Spirituality) and all things 'Paperwork' - which Australia has 2/3rds more than any other nation.
...will become, like ART, strong at the top - weak at the bottom.

So is the polite_Gandalf a Jehovah's Witness?

...this being a Writing Forum. I guess FD is the Master at the Top. Despite the likes of Smith and others to bring him down (tall poppy) and make him 'weak' of position like a PM.

No.

But pretending unions increase inequality because some baseless and thoroughly debunked Milton Freedman brain fart says so is certainly part of the propaganda war against unions that the right (and you) are so united behind.

And more broadly, incoherent culture-war hand waving that directly flys in the face of clear scientific evidence seems to be a right wing specialty. Though like I said, I do give you credit for bucking this trend in relation to climate change.

By that, of course, you mean you cited a baseless brain fart from Milton Friedman, declared it as gospel truth, and flatly refused to either explain it more fully, or substantiate it in any way - and spent the rest of the "discussion" screaming "liar" to anyone who disagreed with you and tapdancing away from any attempts to get you to address the actual topic.

Much the same as what most fanatics of right wing dogma do.
