Trans woman Evie Amati has begun the process of “de-transitioning” from jail, where she was sentenced to at least four-and-a-half years for a brutal axe attack she inflicted in a convenience store in Sydney’s inner west in 2017.

The 26-year-old revealed she was beginning the process in consultation with Justice Health in an affidavit recently filed in the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal, where the crown is appealing the “manifest inadequacy” of her sentence, handed down in January.

Ms Amati was convicted of wounding with intent to murder, causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder and attempting to wound with intent to murder.

Two people suffered severe injuries, including one man who suffered fractures to his nasal bone, eye socket and cheekbone, and a woman, whose skull was fractured when Amati swung the axe into the back of her head at the Enmore 7-Eleven.

Appealing the sentence, the Crown argued that not only was the overall sentence inadequate but that the individual sentences imposed were also too lenient.

In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court opposing the appeal, Amati said she understood the need for her incarceration, but appealed to the court not to extend her sentence.

“I beg for the court’s mercy to not impose more time upon someone genuinely trying to make amends with the victims, the community at large, together with ensuring my own rehabilitation,” she said.

“I am doing everything possible to honour the suffering of my victims and their families … [to] resolve the problems that led to my horrific assaults.”

Amati said she had made the decision to begin “de-transitioning” after coming to the realisation that she will never be accepted as a female by the community, a “social reality” she said she must accept.

She said she was still awaiting an appointment with a specialist endocrinologist to begin the process, pointing to a recommendation for such an appointment from Supreme Court Justice Stephen Campbell in refusing bail in 2017.

Amati used the affidavit, filed on July 24, to describe the events that led to the “extremely dark state” that led her to the convenience store.

“I did not reach out for help when I should have during immense turmoil and a background of psychological and physical trauma,” she said.

“I have taken to stabilising myself and eliminating my reliance on cannabis and other narcotics, which was another factor in my offending. My complete abstinence ... has been crucial to my making imprisonment a constructive experience.”

A submission filed by counsel for Amati argued that her long history of mental illness reduced her moral culpability to some extent, which the Crown also conceded during the trial.

Ms Amati’s lawyer Omar Juweinat told the Herald there was nothing typical about his client as she was “so far removed from a typical defendant”.

“The experienced sentencing judge properly took all these factors into account,” he said, describing the resulting sentence as “not insubstantial.”

"To now interfere in that would be to undermine her achievements in custody, together with her prospects of rehabilitation.”

The Court of Criminal Appeal has reserved its decision.

But imo, that dysfunction in our criminal justice system, is just a reflection of just how much social dysfunctionality is accepted [tolerated] in our society, today.


Church priests, raping children,

young people being permitted to ingest harmful and illicit drugs,

violent home invasions,

we see random acts of extreme violence commonly committed on our public streets,

and possibly WORST OF ALL, followers of ISLAM [an acknowledged murderous death cult, which makes lawful to its followers, violent religious bigotry and religious terrorism]
are allowed to enter and migrate to Australia - just because they 'want' to.



Its just sick.

The motive for the original crime is seems pretty clear.

He wanted an axe wound and thought a few other blokes may like one too.
