Title: Study suggests swimming in the sea makes you sick
Post by Unforgiven on Jun 14th, 2018 at 11:14am
This explains Denizen Gordon's condition apart from the kettlebell head shots.

Gordon must be compelled to wear a full body (condom) and face wet suit to prevent 'curries' getting sick as Gordon pulls the puzzled blighters out of the surf.

Gordon! Bondi cigar incoming six o'clock. Save yourself.

A study out of the University of Exeter has found that people who swim in the ocean have a higher risk of contracting ear ailments and gastrointestinal distress that non-sea bathers. The large-scale meta-study hypothesizes pollution is a major factor in increasing swimmers susceptibility to a variety of ailments.

The massive meta-analysis comprised 19 studies totaling over 120,000 people from a variety of high-income countries, including the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. The striking results found that people who bathed in seawater had twice the chance of developing general ear ailments and a 29 percent higher chance of developing a gastrointestinal illness when compared to those who were not exposed to seawater.

"In high-income countries like the UK, there is a perception that there is little risk to health of spending time in the sea," explains one of the authors on the study, Anne Leonard. "However, our paper shows that spending time in the sea does increase the probability of developing illnesses, such as ear ailments and problems involving the digestive system, such as stomach ache and diarrhoea. We think that this indicates that pollution is still an issue affecting swimmers in some of the world's richest countries."

Despite the systematic nature of the analysis there are many limitations to the conclusions generated by this review. Definitions of seawater exposure varied among the studies included, so there is no specificity regarding frequency of exposure or distinctions between types of immersion. Only one study included in the review contained analysis of water samples so there is no data to specifically suggest these illnesses explicitly came from the seawater.

But this is not the first study of its kind from the University of Exeter. In January a team reported that regular surfers in coastal waters off the UK were three times more likely to have an antibiotic-resistant strain of E. coli bacteria in their guts than non-surfers. This study hypothesized that the surfers, who as a group are known to swallow larger volumes of seawater than regular swimmers, were regularly coming into contact with antibiotic-resistant bacteria from a variety of water run-off sources, including farm crops treated with manure and sewage.

Will Gaze, a supervisor on this latest study, suggests the intent of this research is not to deter people from swimming in the ocean, which is associated with many positive effects on physical fitness and well being, but to inform those more vulnerable to certain illnesses of the potential risks.

"Although most people will recover from infections with no medical treatment, they can prove more serious for vulnerable people, such as the very old or very young, or those with pre-existing health conditions," says Gaze. "We have come a long way in terms of cleaning up our waters, but our evidence shows there is still work to be done."

The study was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

La Merde,
Out from Bondi,
La Merde,
Right in your eye....
It rots your clothes
And blocks your nose...
Just look at the sh1ts,
That are sailing...

La Merde,
Out on the sea,
La Merde
Waiting for me,
It kills your fish,
And don't you wish,
You didn't have shlts,
That go sailing...

I'd be interested to know how it varies with location. I picked up plenty of ear infections as a kid from swimming in fresh water. Salt water seems to clear up chest, sinus and ear problems.

Welcome to 1990 before the Bondi 2km outfall was built.

Storm water in some conditions can be an issue but you just use common sense. I've never had an earache.

I actually just got back from the beach, light off-shore wind, crystal clear.

Here's a pic from yesterday, taken by 1stborn

Same yesterday at Forster where I was up on the point whale watching and dolphin watching.  Lovely clear water and flat as a tack.

Are those objects in the water conglomeration of petrified Bondi cigars and flushed things?

In a thousand years humans will be able to mine Bondi beach for fertilizer.

Coastal beaches are generally much cleaner around Port Phillip bay than the town beaches.

That's where I go for a swim in summer time never had a problem.

Generally salt water is good for you.

Gordon, darling, is that where you send all the "Curries" you 'rescue' from the sea?

Salt Water (the Sea, the Ocean) is the 'blood' of the world.
Cleansing oneself in the sacred waters of life
washes away all ailments of the soul
and enriches the health of one's skin.
Submerging oneself into the vibrant blue-green sea
gives a spiritual enlightenment of being one with Gaia.

Basically. In a nutshell - I go diving deep into all that salt water and quite enjoy getting 'narked' off my tittties at 40+ metres deep.  :D

Nah - stayed on dry land up on a bluff... whales were miles out... just a few spouts in the distance...

Mate swam at Bondi last week and noticed many 'tourists' letting 'floaters' go in the water, rather than use the toilets.
Apparently, in other countries - this is considered 'normal' behaviour.
I've dived a wreck 2kms out from Bondi, but I've only ever swam at Bondi once when very young.
It left a bad taste in my mouth and I never returned.
It sums up Sydney considerably: Over-Rated.
A terrible beach that isn't really that big, over-crowded, full of Rips and Dumpers, has pot-belly 'Beach Masters' with their gold rolex's sleazing for filth, thieves, Celebrity egos, snobs, hipsters, rubbish.

Yep - Bondi is a Back-water.

Don't swim behind whales or Gordon who looks like a whale. Long stream of brown substance ejected out might give you nasty surprise.

You'll recognize Gordon by the mooning as he drops his shorts and ejects a brown torpedo.

Nobody told them tourists that bodily fluids attract sharks.... no wonder they get eaten ... which reminds me - where are the annual reports of 'entire Middle Eastern family wiped out on fishing trip' or 'dopey Gypo swept away by Kiama Blowhole' or 'Asian rock fisherman swept out to sea - search continues' or 'drunken Pom missing after midnight swim off Bondi after party' or 'Search will resume at first light for missing backpacker last seen on surfboard at Cronulla feeding sharks' or 'Ten more Tourists vanish in muddy creeks in Northern Territory while swimming' ................

Ever since a small crocodile surfaced in front of me at Yeppoon beach, I have not been in the water. Having watched the Olympics at Brazil (not that I was there), I had wondered how they let the competitors use the beach for their marathon swimming.

It will take a lot of convincing to get me to go swimming at the beach again.

Up north you can get tropical ulcers from the coral spawn if its that time of year and with sandfly bites its not hard. Also crocodiles can cause death.

Which day? Here's a photo from last week. Not many (no) Indians in the water ;) just surfers in wetsuits. Bit hard to drop a log in a wetsuit I reckon.

Yeah, I know it's disappointing to you that Bondi actually has crystal clear water these days. That's why a freestanding house here cost about $5M

Here's one from the next day. Notice the same smudge on top right of the frame from damage to the lens.

I'm sorry Gordo
But Bondi is a Bog-hole.

I prefer beaches where you can turn around and see trees and other 'relaxing' get away from it all stuff.
Not pretentious mansions, high-rises, apartments, carparks and hipsters jogging by continuously. Let alone people staring at you with binoculars from verandahs and hanging their washing out on balconeys.
Hell, let alone 'crowds'.

Would you go for a 'bush-walk' along a trail between two buildings and apartments? :-?
Not really, unless you need to have the security of a café-latte provider nearby and tables where you can play with your phone.

But I guess some people like Sydney beaches ...and the odd turd in their dessert, like at Coogee.

You need to get out of Sydney Gordo. I'm afraid all the 'turdles' that are piling up there from Harris Park to Bondi are starting to take their toll on you. You are being over-whelmed by 'turds'.
Sure Sydney is a lot cleaner than it was before 2000, but a toilet is still a toilet.

I live by a lake and the ocean is just a 10 min drive away.
I get to experience the same as you - but without all that 'sheeet' that comes with an over-priced, over-populated, over-developed, under-planned, etc ...city.
In fact, I must live in a good area along the coast - thousands of Tourists come here to visit.

...funny how at Holidays, hundreds of thousands of people from Sydney & Melbourne can't wait to 'leave' their cities.

Bondi ...Bog-i
