Title: Can you recommend a movie I can watch?
Post by Lord Herbert on Apr 8th, 2018 at 3:49pm
I'm thinking of watching Liam Neeson in the action-thriller 'Run all Night'.

I was going to watch him in 'The Commuter', but the reviews are so appalling that I'm giving it a miss.

I've been enjoying Liam Neeson's reappearance in movies after his long break from his earlier years. Also a big fan of Ed Harris.

I'm also considering 'Logan' with Hugh Jackson.

Guess what. Movies are crap these days. All the talent is being put into series.

Try these, all IMDB 8 or higher, intelligent and insanely well made.

Better Call Saul

Thanks, I've written those down for later review. I think I've seen Westworld ~ with Yul Brynner who was in the same class as my aunt when she lived in Harbin.

Ah-ha. Will check it out.

It always intrigues me that we can watch a movie in our own homes for the price of $12 worth of King Prawns when it took millions to produce these movies.

That really is quite amazing.

Herbert,

Try THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB.    [2007]

It is about human relationships [real men, and real women     ;)   ].

.....although there are two lesbian relationships [too] in the movie.

Read Jane Austen at school (under duress) ~ found it boring, and then years later told my horrified Russian aunt that I thought its acclaim as a classic of literary excellence was over-stated and had become sacrosanct against any kind of criticism.

BUT!

I do owe it another visit after all these years, and hopefully I'll fall under its spell as so many of the literati and the North Shore glitterati and silver-tails have.

Deadwood is/was great.

Bosch is just so so.  Anyone who has read the books probably wouldn't like Titus Welliver in the lead though.   A bit like the Tom Cruise/Jack Reacher thing.  He's too short.

Ray Donovan was ok but I couldn't get all the way through it.

Herb, I enjoyed 'the Founder', starring Michael Keaton. A movie about Ray Kroc, THE McDonalds' king-pin might not sound very exciting, but there is a really thought-provoking moral fable in there.

O Brother where art thou is a classic, truly great film, the other 3, are OK, but over hyped, watchable, but not much more than that.

I have unbelievably good taste, and have always been amazingly cool, and a trendsetter, so you can take these to the bank.

Small Town Crime,  just watched it recently, small film that packs a punch, well worth the time.

If you can handle sub titles a Korean film I watched was weird but amazingly enjoyable was
"Along With The Gods The Two Worlds", a guy has to go through seven trials in hell to get reincarnated, offbeat cool.

All the money in the world, about the john paul getty 111 kidnapping is pretty watchable.

I loved Baby Driver, it has a weird coolness to it that is hard to explain, but it put a smile on my face.

Cloud Atlas is a classic older movie I adore, multiple viewings are a joy, so buy don't rent.

Master and Commander possibly my most watched film of all time, one to own too.

Mollys Game is decent, certainly worth a watch.

I Tonya is much better than I expected, like Mollys Game, worth a viewing.

Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri is GREAT, probably the best of the latest releases.

So, take yer pick, you can't go wrong.
Sex??m Sorry, forgot that bit, Charlize Theron nudes up a bit in Atomic Blonde, a spy film, that is way better than the reviews credit it, worth a watch, even if just for the nice butt. :o

If you want a bit hotter, 1986 classic, Something Wild has Melanie Griffith going at it when she was young and hot. She looked exactly like a girl I used to go with in the 70's, so it certainly floats my boat.

That do you for now?

You have plenty of suggestions there. I'll try to check some of those that I haven't seen, however most seem to be a little bit lame-brain. I'm a bit disappointed in the suggestions provided. Breaking Bad was an amazing and thought provoking series. You would not be disappointed in putting in a few hours to see if it hooks you.

But I think that you are requesting movies.

One movie that comes to mind fairly recently is "Black Mass". Awesome movie. I'm sure you'll love that one.

A Quiet Place turned out to be a good horror movie, with an original premise.

Ready Player One, if you don't mind a teenager type sci-fi fantasy action movie, was quite mind blowing -- even if it ended up seemingly so-so near the end.

Thank God for the large flat screen TV. It has made a trip to the cinema redundant in most cases. I read somewhere that the USA produces 400 feature films a year. I don't know if there is any other country that comes close.

A few years back, the influence of American media was decried, but that was back before the coffee explosion and the adoption of African American salutations. Same thing happened in France, where they now eat more McDonald hamburgers than the famous old baguette sandwich.

I find big production US movies hard watch. The actors mostly seem to have come from the same stud-farm, and the productions are just a bit too slick. The plots are riddled with stuff I, at the least, have heard before, in some form.

I'll watch American movies, in the hope, something interesting will turn up, but more often than not I'll turn it off, and go play my guitar, or, (oh the mental energy it takes) read a book.

Yes, and still as much a 'thriller' as any of the movies coming out of Hollywood today.

Hitchcock's Rear Window still has me watching it after all these years.

And many more of the Golden Oldies.

Julian Sands, Nastassia Kinski and a young Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Undeniably the most 'emmaculate' foreign film ever made.
Superb performances from all three actors.
Julian Sands nails it!

Time Bandits. A Terry Gilliam classic.

Actually, I just downloaded the first 4 of 5 episodes of Chernobyl. Horrific and all true.

"Criminal" is pretty good. I  normally get bored with movies and switch them off but that one lasted to the end.

That was basically a more realistic "Alien" movie. That final scene had me on the edge of my seat in the theatre. Even the other night I was watching, I was still waiting for the end scene to contain bonus footage of an alternative ending.

I recommend you watch the World Famous (and it really is) movie called THE ROOM.
I guarantee you will never see another Film quite like it.
Not many people can make it to the end and nearly all who have seen it, never watch it again.

In that case you must be talking about "the worst movie ever made" (according to hundreds of reviews).

Ignore JaSin's recommendation, people (just ignore him in general is pretty good advice).

It has a cult following, but it's really not worth watching.

You'd enjoy 'Zombeavers' much more.

Best movie ever.

It's on Netflix.

Three college girls go up to the lake (American teenagers are always going up to the lake).

Whilst sunbathing topless, they see a beaver dam.

They go to investigate, and the old guy who comes out of the bush with a gun (again, always an old guy in the bush) says "What are you girls up to?"

One of them says "We're just looking for some beaver".

Old guy says "Aren't we all?".

It just gets better from there.

There's even a beaver on beaver scene.

It's on SBS online too.

Their frolicking fun comes to an abrupt end when toxic zombie beavers try to eat them.

And why should not people 'experience' THE ROOM?
Just because it is voted the worst movie ever, why can't people see for themselves, what they think of the worst movie ever.

Your ZombieBeaver is a blatant attempt to be the worst apathetically. Just a college dorm movie.  ::) Similar to the other College Dorm USA movies you watch... all those college young girls during freshman.

With THE ROOM, the Director was serious about his work.
That's authentic!

Not really, they lay their eggs in other bird's nests. They hatch, throw out the real offspring, and get fed by the "cucked" parents. Do you know why we have the term "cucked" or "cuckoled" in human societies? Women let their men be cucked all the time, it's estimated 10% of children raised by men are not their own.

As a young 15 yo was was offered in Kalgoorlie "You pretty wart boi, come on, you wanna moonya tuppy?" I backed away... We did go and talk to the hookers on Hay? street often. There was the upper and lower, the upper had the young ones, lower and it was not as well lit with what I assumed were the grannies. They would never let us in, not that I really wanted to, they knew we were illegal. It was a good time talking to them and the first time I heard the term "slops bucket". The girls were very open with what they did.

That's part of my running away from home story as a young fella. I worked in the mines out of Kalgoorlie(Kalgoorlie Lakeview and Star). Lied about age. You may not believe all of it if I told it. Formative years. God bless the '70s.

But Cuckoo's do not have nests...

That's strange.

Eh wart boi you could have had my children moonya

Oh I believe it. I lived in Kalgoorlie for a time, pretty fuqed up place to say the least.

70's was a good era for music.  :D bet it's even more so for the nostalgia factor (early 90's baby here).

I have really cool stories from then, from Melbourne ethinc Sharpies to boongs playing pool sharks "use it like a spear bro" and beat them.

The ethincs wanted a shower, we took them back to our boarding house and let them use the showers, the boarding house owner threw a spaz. I gave him enough schit to make him stutter for the whole process of kicking us out. We moved. We also had and older guy who wanted to root us, Shorty. Fun times.

His nick "shorty" was well deserved, he was a really short red headed guy in his late 30s, early 40s. Yeah he was a poof and we knew it.  Didn't stop us from having parties. What disturbed me was one night we had an arm wrestling comp. He already had his "boi" and I won every round. Shorty then got pissed and abused his boi and didn't want him anymore. He wanted me. That wasn't going to happen but what really pissed me was he started to diminish his boi, abusing him and deeming him unworthy of being Shorties boi, he was crying badly. He wanted me. Eek.

More fun stories later, be assured my arse remained intact.

I like watching Foreign films - most are very original and not fictional far-fetched like USA films of today.
When young, Foreign Films taught me to speed read the subtitles - especially during the sex scenes.  :D Wouldn't want to miss the action  ;)

For something light, there's Murder Mystery on Netflix, with Adam Sandler and Jenifer Aniston.  Watched it last night

For change of pace, after the above, began watching a foreign series, called, I think, Dark Spot.  About an isolated town in French forests.  Town has had 37 murders in the past x years, according to a visiting official.  Scenery's not bad.  Has an episode about a wolf, which was a nice touch.  Caves, insane people, lots of dankness and rain dripping from forest branches, mists, intrepid female police lead, a gay police offsider, long empty roads -- through forests of course.  Enough oddities to keep it moving and nothing too disturbing.  Might watch the rest tonight
