Title: Road Rules many do not know
Post by RightSaidFred on Mar 14th, 2018 at 5:03pm
https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/motoring/car-advice/statistics-show-hundreds-are-copping-fines-for-lesser-known-road-rules/news-story/32b1bae2b5d1d09cf3cf38e75c97b43b

I was surprised I knew most of these rules

The one I partially did not know:

— Motorists, passengers and cyclists must not lead an animal, including by tethering the animal to the motor vehicle.

I see that one broken all the time, big fast dogs can travel much faster then a human, not sure how you would exercise them properly otherwise.

No only rules about helmets, you see it a lot with these step through vespa looking bikes.

A helmet will only save your life in a low speed accident, at a high speed accident pure luck is about the only thing that might save you.
They should make those spine hump things compulsory, the racers wear them and many serious riders.

Forget about the obscure rules. The everyday ones are just as misunderstood. There is always confusion at roundabouts. Makes it hard since I can't read minds.

Yes....best just to assume the bastard who is not indicating is gonna head across you, and stay out of harm's way.

Can there be a road rule about people not picking their nose in the car?  Nose pickers should lose demerit points

Yuck

It isn't only indicating. Half don't seem to know who gives way to who so they give way to everybody and hold up the works.

Its kind of proof that police quotas are not wide spread they could just sit at any busy roundabout for an hour then go to the pub !

There is one I could not nail down on the NSW Gov site ..... but should be a rule, if you are turning put you indicator on first then brake. A lot of drivers seem to have some weird blinker usage minimisation process of some kind or not at all.

I think there is a minimum time period prior to turning that you have to indicate.

At a roundabout you indicate when you have passed the last intersection just before you exit!!!

Entrapment is rife on Australian roads

Setting up the system to raise revenue

This is demonstrably obvious with the ongoing and continued speed limit changes, often many times in a few klm.

Often these changes are indicated by a single sign, which, if obscured by a truck and not see, results in a lucritive income for the grubberment.

School zones where the nearest school is in a backstreet over 1\2 klm from the road on which the camera is set up.

School zones around universities
If our teachers are too incompetent to teach uni students enough to not walk on to the road, and if our uni students are too stooopid to not realize that they are not as solid as a vehicle, there is no hope for the future.

Mobile speed cameras on two and three lane roads, with unrealistically slow speeds and always, ALWAYS set up on the downhill run while hidden in the scrub and signs that ALWAYS seem to have fallen over.

It's nothing to do with safety
Absolutely nothing to do with safety
Getting a fine weeks or months after the incident is irresponsible.

Finally,
If govco was serious about saving lives
They would chase drug and drunk drivers.
Not the token few they test occasionally
But some serious and ongoing testing, but that costs money and govco only want to collect money, not save lives.

That is very problematic in the pokey little suburban roundabouts unless you do less than 10kph.

Motorists = out the window of a car.
Passengers = out the window of a car.
Cyclists = whilst riding a bike and or motorcycle.

It has SFA to do with them being walked by a person on foot.

People who can run with their dogs do...

those that can't walk.

Walks are still exercise.

Braking is largely automatic. Autopilot, if you will. You don't want to invent weird rules about not doing it until you have done something else.

Many use a bike see it all the time, the only other way would be to have two fast big dogs chase each other. These dogs need to stretch out it relaxes them.
I guess it makes sense to be illegal as it is dangerous.

A lot of WA drivers don't know the local rules regarding u-turns at traffic lights.

It's pretty simple, though: you must NOT make a u-turn at traffic lights (unless there is a ‘U-turn permitted’ sign).

From memory there are only about 3 or 4 sets of traffic lights in Perth that have ‘U-turn permitted’ signs.

Despite that, you see drivers doing it at traffic lights everywhere, every day.

Yes saw one yesterday ... down the road from me there's a set of lights ... which of course has double white lines a certain distance back from the stop line.

I see people constantly crossing those double white lines in one direction in front of the lights to enter  a service station .... instead of going around the corner.

The double white lines were put there because a motorbike rider who came around the left hand corner with right of way was killed by an idiot right turning into the service station just prior to the intersection.

It boils my p1ss.

That's a pet hate of mine.
The car in front of you brakes........you have no idea what's going on....then at the last minute they put their indicator on.

I am living in a ghost town.

It has streets and houses but no people (well bugger all) I found myself not indicating at a corner,,,, made me shudder.

I got better.

A question on road use.

Two cars coming in opposite directions to a stop sign.

One car is turning left the other turning right.

Who has right of way?

Usually the one turning left, but what if the one turning right has stopped and the one turning left has not stopped yet.

If the one who has already stopped does not have right of way,,,, why have stop signs, just use give way signs?????

Give way does not mean if you get there at exactly the same time. It means don't get in the way. If you get there early enough to get through without blocking them, then you are still giving them way.

I have never seen an intersection where all entrances (or more than one) has a 'Give Way,' sign.

I particularly like the rule that says if you walk away from your car without locking it you can be fined.

This is the level to which our Lord's and masters have sunk.

Don't chase criminals, chase the people with money to pay fines.

Why do you think they have all these holiday speed blitzes???

Because the grubberment know that WORKERS take time off and will pay the fines

Whereas, normal bunnies driving around have a much lower cash revenue recovery because many are too broke to pay fines.

It's all about the cash, nothing else.

The other one is some don't put an indicator on at lights but when the light goes green on it comes.
Its like people think if they use their indicator too much they will break or some other weird theory.

Yes Couriers hate that one not sure about the rationale ...... leaving the door unlocked can save you money. My brother in law's work van they smashed his window to steal about $5 of coins in the ash tray. Car security is a myth.

Stops signs are meant to make you actually stop as they consider the intersection more problematic but yes stopping may not make it safer. Concurrent events can be confusing especially at roundabouts.

Actually I'm noticing the vast majority of people being extra careful and leaving a gap around cyclists.

The other day however I had a taxi beep me from behind because I was going slow as passing a cyclist on a narrow road would have meant either a 10cm gap or a 1m gap and a head on with a car coming the other way.

He needed the schit smacked out of him.

Yesterday I saw a taxi pull in front of a scooter on Oxford St. The poor rider was on Ps and didn't react well, she got all out of control and crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

It was a miracle she didn't get killed by an on comming car.

By getting as far to the left as possible, riding in the designated bike lanes or bike paths where they are provided instead of on the road proper.

the gap between the bike & car is determined by the passing car of course but that can be assisted by the bike rider .... especially on narrower roadways.

I don't drive a Hilux .... but I do drive another make of 4x4 ute. :P

Because the grubberment know that WORKERS take time off and will pay the fines

Whereas, normal bunnies driving around have a much lower cash revenue recovery because many are too broke to pay fines.

It's all about the cash, nothing else.

Don't break the rules, and you get to keep your cash.

Simples!

Yeah mainly the cyclists.

re: the hilux or similar ute ....BS.

Ummm how can the cyclists maintain a gap with a far faster moving vehicle. And in my experience, its the dickheads are always driving hiluxes.

Not saying all hilux drivers are dickheads, just that all dickheads seems to be in the hiluxes.

Again in my experience they do that (but I'm waiting for the inevitable comment about riders riding side by side)

Well someone always brings it up and goes "oh, but they can't do that"

And response will be, but they can and its safer

I remember when I was at primary school, and all of our text books had messages on the back cover that said "Always ride in single file", with a drawing of a few kids on bikes.

We had it drummed into us.

Can't find any pics of them on the interwebs, though.

No-one rides to School, except in Mum's four wheel drive.

The hundreds of kids you and I have seen riding to/from School along Walker or George Streets etc are no more.

Probably something to do with all the Hilux drivers 'encouraging' them to right a bit further off to the side.

A person turning left always has the right of way even if the car turning right has got to the stop sign first.

Thats pretty much how I play it,,, but the stop sign is a bit overboard then.

Young girls don't ride in Sydney

Too many muzzle rapists
Somali rapists
African rapists

And leg drivers who can't drive straight

Reading this has been very instructive, I knew lots of posters weren't the sharpest knife in the block, but I had no idea they were also such useless blinkin' drivers.

There was one rule I have never heard of, the one saying you must lock your car before leaving it.

Are the folk saying that is a Road Law sure about that?
Might it just be a local by law rule?

If it is a law, and I'm driving a convertible, do I have to put the roof on before I move away from the car?

Shoot down the shops, park, lock the car, put the roof up, go and buy a loaf of bread, come back, unlock, put roof down, drive on??
Sounds like I would be telling the bylaws officer to go stick his head up a dead bears bum.

Cyclists riding side by side on narrow single lane roads.
Get a feckin life, your mission is not to become a mobile road block and piss people off so much that less tolerant hilux drivers then drive way to close, too fast, too often, because he has decided you are all self absorbed lycra wearing wankers.

Who has the right of way at a stop sign??
Give up your licence now. If you do not know that, then you are a danger to yourself and everyone else.

(BTW the answer is, if the guy turning right is there and stationary, and ready to go, and it is clear both ways, then go you pain in the arse, pricks like you are why it takes too long to get anywhere because BAD drivers, think they are just being more cautious and considerate than the rest. WRONG, they are friggin pests.
The car approaching from the opposite way has to slow down, and come to a complete stop, before he is allowed to proceed.
IF, you arrive just a fraction before the guy opposite turning left, then you may not have time to complete your turn, before he starts his, so the right turning vehicle should wait, and give way to the one turning left, cos he has right of way.

Brake before indicating??? Big deal, you have to indicate at least 30 metres before turning, if you need to break sooner than that to negotiate the corner, you are probably a really crap driver, but it isn't the end of the world.

Put your indicator on in the roundabout just before you turn???? IDIOT.

30 metres, remember that one? Unless it is one hellishly huge roundabout, you generally have your indicator on before you get to the roundabout, UNLESS you are going straight ahead.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?????

Anyone that uses a vehicle to lead a dog, should then be made to swap places, and go home the other way, with the dog leading them. The dog is probably the smarter anyway.

Here is one for you
I'm not sure if it's still in force, but up to a few years ago, taxi drivers were required to carry a value of hay.

And it's legal for a man to per on the wheel of a taxi, providing it is done with a degree of decorum.

There are some strange ones out there
