Title: Jordan Peterson's rebuttal; If the risk of offend Post by Yadda on Mar 13th, 2018 at 12:39am Jordan Peterson's rebuttal; If the risk of offending others is truly an unconscionable act, then surely, not one of us has any right to even utter one word or sentence - EVER. i.e. Surely, if you are telling me, that offending others [with what i may say] is unconscionable, then what is your justification for engaging in such behaviour - SPEAKING ? Title: Re: Jordan Peterson's rebuttal; If the risk of offend Post by Yadda on Mar 13th, 2018 at 1:26am Speaking to the blind and fundamental error, of those who worship, within the temple of Political Correctness.... "If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error." - J.S. Mill - English philosopher - on people who try to silence opinions with which they disagree The insanity generated by blind adherence to political-correctness demands that we protect Muslim hate speech while condemning anyone who dares to criticize it. 'Ron' https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/11987/us-mosques-muslims-incitement "There are two ways to be fooled [deceived]. One way is to believe what is not true. The other is to refuse to accept what is true." - Soren Kierkegaard There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance - that principle is contempt prior to investigation. - Herbert Spencer "Nothing is gained by teaching a parrot a new word. What is needed is the right to print what one believes to be true, without having to fear bullying or blackmail from any side." - George Orwell ideology vs. truth "I consider that willingness to criticize Russia and Stalin is the test of intellectual honesty." - George Orwell, to his friend John Middleton Murry, a wartime pacifist "In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell [even if this quote is mis-attributed to Orwell, the pursuit of truth remains a great virtue] "If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear." - George Orwell "The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it." - George Orwell |

Correct.
There is no right to 'be offended' by common everyday language - that's your problem and nobody else's and you can always seek help with it. If you prefer not to drive on the highways of life, there is always some other way to get through the jungle. Now then - what was this about QANTASspeak? |

I actually agree that freedom of speech should trump the right not to be offended but like i said in that other thread - a business has a right to try not to offend its customers. Theres also the ppl out there who choose to be offended by ppl trying not to be offensive which just makes it worse.

Yes QantasSpeak is a classic case but you do have a right to be offended if so say so. What you don't do is over react to a polite reference to a societal norm like the dope running Qantas does. |

Words, in their essence, are ideas and, an expression of our imagination. What cost [to Leftist 'sensibilities'], the right of others to speak their mind ? The right to challenge deeply held and deeply entrenched 'beliefs' ? Remember, that not so long ago, the prevailing wisdom, which had been embraced by the majority of the peoples of Europa, was that if men sailed too far from land, that they were certain to fall off the edge of the world. After 1492, Christopher Columbus confirmed to the people of Europe, that beyond the western horizon, there existed 'a new world' ! If one wishes to enslave people, constrain their capacity for independent thought - not their hands; for the chain of dependence is incomparably stronger than the chain of iron. - Law v Freedom |
