Title: New SSD for old laptop ?
Post by Sprintcyclist on Dec 25th, 2017 at 5:49pm

My old ASUS gave a 'HDD' sort of  click click clicking while I was trying to start it.

Forced it shutdown, and it restarted ok.

Time for a new SSD I think.
Any suggestions?

it's prob about 4+ years old

Any SSD you like but more important put a new computer around it. Still prefer to use a real disk for storage.

SSD for boot, anything worth storing across 2+ drives.

What if I do a ghost of my drive and set up an autoback up ?

This HDD has settled down. Due to age though, now id the time to prepare

dear Sprint,
I've been burnt too many times resurrecting old laptops.

Unless the laptop is an i7 quad core I wouldn't bother spending any money on it.
Just try & save the data on it with a USB backup hard drive
& buy a new laptop.

Just rip the HDD out and use an ext dock to pull the data off it with the new machine.

It is an i7 , don't know what core.
5+ years old.  I agree with your idea of not spending much money on it.

I more want a ghost of the entire HDD I have now  than just various files.
Am thinking the NAS will do that easy peasy.
Then I still need another new HDD/SSD .....

Yes, so a new spare SSD/HDD on USB now is a good idea.

Copy this one old HDD entirely onto a new SSD/HDD.
Hey, may a well put the new one in as soon as it is done ?

Thanks Bobby

As Set has said the HDD you have linked to is not an SSD type drive.
Not all i7s are quad cores - some laptop versions are only dual cores.
Find the type of CPU:

With Win7:
From the Start Menu open the Control Panel. Scroll down to the section marked System and then select View amount of RAM and processor speed. From the window that is displayed, you'll be able to see which edition of Windows your PC is running, as well as the system type, processor and amount of RAM installed.

In the pic below it says 2 CPU ( & core2 duo) so it's only a dual core.

The usual place I buy computers from is shut for a week so I had a peek at Gumtree.  They have respectibly fast refurbished PCs for like  $200....

When you have it back how you want it, before you break it, take an image of it.

Something like this, take a look around. https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-iso-image-windows-system/ DVDs are cheap.
Keep your personal files backed up or copied to a network or USB drive.

Good idea.
I had backed up all the images I wanted while it was still running.

An image is a good idea.

Sprint,

Now you have upgraded the old one with SDD for boot drive(system disk) is it booting a lot faster now? Do you apps run faster?

My experience has taught me to just buy a mid range laptop every three years, that was I get the benefit of how that improve the bus between CPU and HDD ...etc and it makes a different as a integrated system.

I use large excel files and now it flies. The extra memory with a new system helps. New drivers, new bits and pieces. Upgrading can be a more cost effective option.

No, I did not get a SSD. (don't tell anyone though !!)

My asus goes into sleep mode when I close the lid, so booting up is quick anyway.

Am still turning off windows 10 rubbish ...........

I don't know what issue you could have with Windows 10.

It is good. Reliable ...etc. Granted never take the first release but I think it is good. Running it on old hardware not designed for it may be an issue though.

Why are you still against Windows 10.? is it because of your hardware?

Got the new HDD and Windows 10 running well.
Turning off all the images and comments they have coming up on powerup, defragging, disk cleanup.

runs well

I have been listening to this argument for 20 years. I totally agreed in the past but is this true now. I am not sure but not technically qualified to dispute.

One thing is for sure, Unix did not take off as we all thought it would. It's space is not what corporates use. Hosting web sites and specialist applications what it does well. Even in VM environments often you have windows on the bottom layer with unix running in a VM.

As to security, if you are up to date, rarely do I hear of security breaches and the internal security is very strong these days.

Also Windows spends a lot of time on it's internal stuff, unix flies. So if you want something to really run fast and it is a maths problem, unix I would go for.

But today, if I was to build a commercial application, I would go Windows. Everyone has it, it can now scale. SQL is super fast and scalable and comparable to Oracle. All the office stuff works well. The .NET framework is very good and powerful. The IDE (development tools) is just great.

So I think it is a religious topic, like Ford vs Holden. Horses for courses.

Windows has about 75% of the market.

The customers always right.

As in the other thread just buy a new laptop.

Laptops are pretty much worth nothing after 5 years, not worth upgrading and if its used for work its a tax write off.

I buy my stuff from Graysonline at big discounts , the laptop I am using now I got for $650 .... its over 2 years old and back then it retailed at around $1900 ...... I would be lucky to get $300 for it on the second hand market now. Mobile phones are even worse !

Good idea on a PC but on a laptop makes it a heavy unit !

Why not just OS SSD and storage on the cloud ?
Makes the laptop potentially under 1 KG
I use all three to be honest with data trust nothing !
