New hijab-wearing Barbie modelled on Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad

The maker of Barbie says it will sell a doll modelled after Ibtihaj Muhammad, an American fencer who competed in last year's Olympics while wearing a hijab.

Mattel, the company that manufactures the famous range of dolls, says the hijab-wearing Barbie will be available online next spring in Australia.

The doll is part of the Barbie "Shero" line that honours women who break boundaries.

Past dolls have included gymnast Gabby Douglas and Selma director Ava DuVernay.

Ibtihaj Muhammad posted on Twitter she was "proud" young people would be able to play with "a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab!"

What accessories would come with 'Christian Barbie?

A priest, carrying a bag of lollies?

A rod (to beat her children with)?

A book outlining the reasons why science isn't real?

I'm curious.

The Hijab is mandatory for women in Saudi Arabia and Iran, nice to see the leftists continuing to support this oppression of women.

Rita Panahi is an ex muslim from Iran, I wonder what she says about the Hijab- https://twitter.com/RitaPanahi/status/868596061811507200

I have no idea why some of you stick up for Islam, it's a toxic pox on mankind. Sure stick up for the people who are it's victims, those inculcated to it through accident of birth or threat, but why would anyone defend such a "faith" of their own free will?

As an atheist I see religions as nothing more than a collection of customs,  ideas and traditions.

On balance Islam is the worst of the lot.

Moral confusion

Me: Okay... Let’s make it even simpler. What if we found a culture that ritually blinded every third child by literally plucking out his or her eyes at birth, would you then agree that we had found a culture that was needlessly diminishing human well-being?

She: It would depend on why they were doing it.

Me (slowly returning my eyebrows from the back of my head): Let’s say they were doing it on the basis of religious superstition. In their scripture, God says, “Every third must walk in darkness.”

She: Then you could never say that they were wrong.

Pretty much my view. Not all cultures or religions are equal. Some are downright offensive.

edit: Superstition... We were eating with chopsticks last night, my middle son is up from Canberra and his girl is Chinese, youngest's is a Nip. We were talking about how to use chopsticks correctly, I suggested just stab them in the food a stick into your mouth. I was told "no you cant do that!" I asked why? My youngest son said superstition, his wife disagreed, we then had her explain it, "it's like bad luck, you stick two incense sticks that way in front of a grave!" we were told, immediately my son and I laughed and said "so superstition!" I think she got the message.

I think it comes down to victimhood and white knight syndrome. Some people see those on the receiving end, even if it is just verbal criticism, and assume they must therefor be innocent victims in need of their assistance. The decision is made on the superficial appearance, in ignorance of what is actually being said or done. It helps of course if they are a minority. Minorities are always the victims.

(Clears throat) Allow me to explain. Australia, like much of the Western World made a radical shift away from racist policies after WW2. This was parallel to the dismantling of European colonialism. Liberation movements and other socially progressive ideals gain wide acknowledgement in the 1960s, including a cynical view of governments with nuclear weapons. The humanist perspective had a certain logic, but progressives made two mistakes. They blamed Europe for racism due to the much publicized African American slavery, while not bothering to examine inequality and ignorance in other cultures. (Including Arab African slavery) And it assumed that humanist success in the West would simply spread world wide by the weight of apparent logic. It didn't work.

Why the latest batch of humanist do-gooders stick up for Islam is because if they don't, they may have to examine their own short-sighted view of morals, cultures, history, and human nature. And if there is one thing the sanctimonious hate to do, its admit their assumptions might have been wrong.

From what I've seen, if all east Asians are like the Nips and Chinese, superstition runs in their blood, they don't even notice it, it's just a part of their being. At least it's not overtly harmful, just funny when you point it out to them.

I found the Viets to be very pragmatic about it and after a few beers they laugh at it, and silly rules never get in the way of making.

As an atheist I see religions as nothing more than a collection of customs,  ideas and traditions.

On balance Islam is the worst of the lot.

My youngest son said superstition, his wife disagreed, we then had her explain it, "it's like bad luck, you stick two incense sticks that way in front of a grave!" we were told, immediately my son and I laughed and said "so superstition!" I think she got the message.

my mum would go white if anyone spilt salt in our house it was a big No No  she would rush over grab as much as she could pick up and throw it over her left shoulder.....probably saying a quick prayer to her invisible guiding angel...
we just had to make sure we werent standing behind her inthose moments...

we never did find out. what would happen  if she didnt toss the salt

I'm a lefty humanist but I think the "movement" has left me behind.

The Moslems will soon do to the French
what the Germans did to the Jews.

When the Moslems expend the last essence of their once Great Empire against a France who is sacrificed by the rest of Europe to 'do something about those Moslems'.

The Moslems will become like the Jews before the Germans got to them.

Jews - unarmed
Germans - genocide them
Jews - form Israel and become 'Military' orientated.
Germany - disarmed

So after the Moslems let go of their 'Military' ways against the French.
Then the Italians get taken over by the Mafia and 'genocide' the unarmed Moslems.

Yep - the Italians really cut loose on the Moslems all over the Middle-East.
But as the Moslems 'pray' for help as they are being slaughtered, in a world that has no sympathy because of their past transgressions of Terrorism and genocide of the French.
When all seems lost and as if Allah (God, Yahweh, etc) himself has forsaken them!
From out of nowhere come the Israelis - by then, a Super Power of Military might.
The Jews give the Mafia-Italians a taste of their own Medicine and 'Religion' has almost been extinguished from Europe (Germany, France, Italy)...
...with just the UK (Union Jack 'cross') still flying till the end of the 'story'.  ;)

I can do that, I can also pick up little bits of wasabi and place it on my sushi although I'm yet to find a way to pick up Soy Sauce. It was a discussion about the "right" way to do it.

Not physical appearance.

Oh, you are ARE quick to jump on the VICTIMHOOD bandwagon, aren't you, shoving any momenentary comprehension out of the way in your rush and haste.  A bit like Kameel and the mention or arses and faeces, you are there in a jiffy when Muslim victimhood is to be claimed.

This is the part I'm not getting, a certain subset of people here who defend Islam on the basis of not treating all Muslims as the same, which I don't, are happy to treat other rightwing ideologies and their supporters equally as as bad as each other. You may take Greg's slurs on Trump supporters as one example. All Liberals are bad, all ON supports are stupid racists, yet the same "courtesy" is not given to followers of Islam. no one has ever seriously demanded all one nation voters get thrown out of the country Set. No one has ever seriously demanded we ban all liberal voters from this country. Or that trump supporters be strafed by machine gun fire.

You confuse political bombast with religious persecution.

The fact remains that the greater majority of Muslims do not agree with ISIS' interpretation of the Koran. Isis has what, 50? 100 000 supporters globally? there are 1.8B muslims. If Islam was as evil as some on here try to make out then we'd get a hell of a lot more than the occasional stabbing or shooting.

But there are far more than the occasional stabbing or looting from this 3% minority in our country.

They, as a group, are overrepresentedin virtually every violent crime statistic.

They, as a group, practice abhorrent cultural, and yet illegal, practices.

They, as a group, all protest waving posters about violence and murder.

Not just the radicals.
Not just ISIS
Not just a few

But all of them.

The only thing stopping them, as a group, from taking over this country and FORCING us to abide by their primitive, brutal rules.
Is that there are not yet enough of them.

But they are working on that, as we speak.

Being somewhat middle of the road with a definite left perspective without an ounce of PC in me, I can't understand why those of the left treat it as some sacred cow. It(Islam) doesn't fit anywhere into what I would consider a left perspective on life, women, socially acceptable views and politics. The ideology should be thrown from tall buildings.

no one has ever seriously demanded all one nation voters get thrown out of the country Set.

You are assuming that ISIS is the only bad version of Islam around. It has been pointed out to you plenty of times already how wrong you are, but still you trot this out. For example, the majority of Muslims in Indonesia (the most populous Muslim country, apparently) and Malaysia support the death penalty for things that no sane person would even consider a crime. What you say is no less idiotic than whining about how the majority of Nazis personally refrained from slaughtering Jews.

no, I gave isis as an example but they're not the only bad egg.

even when you add up all the others, it is still a very small percentage of muslims who are extremists

no, whats idiotic is you trying to attribute to me comments that I've never made.

Are you worried that unless you make crap up your have no argument FD? IS that it? You can't debate what I actually said so instead pretend I said something else? That for me is the very definition of idiotic.

Are you suppressing the memory of what the majority of Malaysian and Indonesian Muslims think? Or is it just a reading comprehension problem? Could it be that you are acknowledging that supporting the death penalty for apostasy and adultery is actually mainstream for Islam? Who knows what is going on in the mind of John? He certainly isn't going to tell us.

What noise does a jellyfish make, John?

you need to stop projecting yourself onto others.

How many times have you pointed this out, FD?

I'm curious.

FD, would you care to say how 18% of Indonesians comprises "a majority of what Indonesian Muslims think"? These are the figures you posted. These are the figures we've discussed in detail. These are the figures you're referring to here.

What noise does a jellyfish make again?

That comes out to an average 38%, not a percentage to be sniffed at. Does that seem sane to you? This is why the ideology sucks, this is what it does to it's followers.
