Interesting bit of trivia i heard about that scene. Apparently the guys playing the centurions were told they were absolutely not allowed to laugh or they would not be paid.

It didn't work.

They got paid anyway.

One of the funniest books I ever read was Graham Chapman's autobiography, A Liar's Autobiography.
If people still read these days, it's a very funny book.
The world was a better place with people like Chapman in it.
He was a poof I think, and all the better for it, it seems!
