Title: Which senators understand senate elections?
Post by freediver on Mar 31st, 2017 at 2:21pm
http://www.ozpolitic.com/electoral-reform/broken-promises-stolen-senate-seats.html#background

I sent the following message to the 12 sitting QLD Senators this afternoon.

Quote:
If a double dissolution election were to be held while you are a Senator, which vote counting method would you support for deciding who gets the 3 and 6 year terms?

I got a response from one Senator's office in 65 minutes:

Malcom Roberts, One Nation: The method preferred by the Senator would be the one which best reflects the outcome that would have been obtained if two half senate elections were called one after the other. Which is probably the method that was used this last election.

Note that the 'order elected' method was one used in the last election. The response is probably referring to the recount method.

I am still waiting on a response from the following Senators:

George Brandis, Liberal
Matthew Canavan, Nationals
Anthony Chisholm, ALP
Pauline Hanson, One Nation
Chris Ketter, ALP
Ian Macdonald, Liberal
James McGrath, Liberal
Claire Moore, ALP
Barry O'Sullivan, Nationals
Larissa Waters, Greens
Murray Watt, ALP

If you don't know what the thread is about, would you mind taking it elsewhere?

The practical ambiguity is of far more concern than Effendi's allegation about ignorance.  This uncertainty needs to be resolved with definition......perhaps by convention.

You're not half bad are you Effendi.  Your 18C windmill tilting has been seen off by a thrashing, so now you revert back to this one, which is fair enough I suppose but you are so mundane in the causes you take up.......those that Floater Voter could not care less about.

.. and the rest don't?  From what I hear from a couple of Independents, they are right on the money, with a few little fripperies on the side.

Like most politicians, they simply need good guidance....

Unlike God - FD can't be all things to all people and everywhere at the one time...

Funny thing - I wrote a short story recently where God was all things to all etc, but preferred to exercise free will in ensuring that SHE did not know everything, which is how Luke (Lucifer) caught her out, the sneaky rat...... a bit tricky for some..  didn't know God carried a hand-bag, did you?  Or that they still use typewriters in Heaven.... or that She'd always been married to the Archangel Gabriel who she had only just met today many thousands of years after The Downfall which was just then taking place...  I know .. I know - this Heavenly Time thing is sooo confusing....

You can find a list of your senators here. Click on your state. The senators will be on the first page of results.

http://www.aph.gov.au/Senators_and_Members

It also provides an email address or online contact form.

Ask them this question:

If a double dissolution election were to be held while you are a Senator, which vote counting method would you support for deciding who gets the 3 and 6 year terms?

Sign off with your name and address as you are more likely to get a response if you are from their state. Post the responses here.

Got a non-answer from Barry O'Sullivan's (LNP) office yesterday. They were good enough to give me a link to the aph.gov.au page explaining how it works. They did not say anything at all about which method the LNP would support in future for allocating short and long term Senate seats.

They wouldn't. They would prefer to keep their options open if they needed to steal another long-term Senate seat in the future.

I would think that the Independents in general care more than the reps from the Major and smaller Party's

These guys take the pay check and support policies that other people develop and believe in. They routinely vote on the party line even when they do not believe it to be the right thing to do.

They are happy with their current position of making a retrospective decision based on which method will benefit them the most in that particular situation.

Got a response from an LNP Senator that appears to support either the order-elected method, or the Senate's right to choose the method. It's a bit unclear. The only thing he was clear on was "I see no reason to change", which I guess is a vote for maintaining uncertainty so the LNP can steal more seats in the future.

In lieu of a response, the Greens sent me this:

As Greens portfolio holder and spokesperson for Democracy, Senator Lee Rhiannon has made a number of comments about this subject. You can find her opinion piece at:

, and watch her speech on the issue here:
